Deep red; a perfect wood stain color. Frothy head. Rich flavor. Bold & full-bodied, yet controlled. Smooth, dry finish with a hint of fruity-alcohol aroma.

Dark brown body with reddish glints. Thin but lasting beige frothy head. Nice malty aroma with various notes of brown sugar, grapes, and vanilla. Taste is rich and complex. It is mainly malty and sweet, but thereís also nutty and roasty hints. It ends with a long, bitter, and warm finish. Excellent choice when coming back from work on a cold and rainy Friday.

341 ml bottle in 6-pack from The Beer Store, served cold in a tulip glass.

App.: Very deep ruby copper, small light tan head, clear. Aroma: Generous amounts of cherry and other fruits mixed with coffee and milk chocolate malts, some earthy/funky hops. Palate: Medium-full body and medium-soft carbonation. Flav.: More earthy and fruity than the nose, some cardboard, the darker malts are subdued; off-dry, mild bitterness and a lightly vinous and medium roasted malt finish.

A touch old I suspect, but still a very likeable beer.

12oz bonus via Puzzl. Pours dark brown with a 1 finger tan head. Nose is sweet and nutty. Taste is sweet with some nice chewy malts, basically a brown ale, with a bit of oomph.

Bottle from secret santa. Some peanut brittle in the aroma with light caramel. Taste is awfully thin and doesn’t have too much flavor -- maybe a touch of anise and some nuts -- but otherwise is a very easy drinker. Nothing too exciting here, though I wouldn’t mind throwing a few of these back.

12 oz bottle. Rich amber with a big head that settled pretty quick. Bready malts mix with dried fruits. The alcohol gives ya quite a buzz pretty quick here. Itís ok.

Sweet floral aroma, auburn, slim head. Coffee, chicory flavour, also roated malts. Fine bitterness, very smooth, complex. Really good ale.

Sampled from 341ml brown bottle. Pours ruby brown with slight off white head which was short lasting. Fruity malt in the aroma. Dark chocolate giving way to a dry, yet short bitter finish. Notes of alcohol throughout. Medium mouthfeel.

(341 ml bottle: Obtained 03-Sep-05 in trade with radiomgb, thanks Jeff!) Mmm, the toasty, malty nose is very alluring, and I canít wait to dive right in and take my first sip. But first, Iíll display some will power and admire the clear, amber-brown color of this beer. The small, beige head settles to a wide ring and patchy film atop the beer. The aromatic, malty nose is calling me more forcefully now, and I canít deny myself any longer. Rich, dark malts are chocolaty, toasty, gently roasty, hinting of smoke. Sweetness is only mild, and it seems moderately buttery. Modest hop bitterness adds a balancing force, but the malts definitely have dominion in this beer. Body is medium-full with a slight bite on the palate. Carbonation is fairly strong when first poured, but settles down somewhat over time. Lacing is spotty with a few small patches. Overall, a wonderful beer that has been a nice celebratory treat for passing a real estate final exam this evening.

Sampled at Cíest Whatís Spring 2005 Festival of Small Breweries. Dark copper colour. Aroma is nutty and roasty, very inviting. Flavour is well rounded, with roasted malt, dark sugar and a bit of fruit. The finish is a little short - an extra hit of hops would be nice - but all in all, itís a good strong ale.
