4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
473mL can from the brewery. Pours a clearish dark brown with a large beige head that leaves lacing. Aroma is superb, layered malt complexity, lots of caramel, roasted malt, toffee, coffee cake, slightly earthy, but what really stands out is the hops, which don’t seem out of place. Flavour is even better, with bittering hops upfront, matched perfectly with waves of malty awesomeness. The deep, rich caramalt aspect reminds me of a Dopplebock, which is always a good thing in my books. ’Chewey’ is a good word here if it makes any sense. Finishes with some dryness and delicious hop flavour. Lingering roasted malt notes. No hint of alcohol, and the body is somewhat full on the palate in a pleasing way. This is absolutely fantastic stuff, very glad I drove out to the brewery to get some.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours deep brown with a light tan head. The Cascade-dominated hop aroma offers a lot of fresh grapefruit, with very slight roasty notes. The taste is of a clean, nicely made IPA - not too bitter up front, the malt is there but not the focus, a slight bit of toast. Citrusy hop finish with some slight herbal and spicy notes. This is the best beer I’ve had from this brewery.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
En fût au Gambrinus, London, Ont.:Corps caramel touffu, plein de rondeur avec une morsure végétale et d’agrumes. Moyenne amertume bien supporté par la richesse du malt. Très agréable.

UPDATED: JUN 29, 2013 2013-01-31. Dark brown body, nice tan head and lace. 3+ Modest aroma, bit of hops and earthy malt character. 7+ Flavour is pleasantly bitter, light leafy green hop character, mild earthy malt notes. Light roast in the finish comes out as you go. 7+ average plus palate. 3++ nice, very drinkable. 7/4/7/4/16 On tap at Bar Hop, Toronto
2012-02-25. Mahogany red-brown body, modest tan and and nice lace on the glass. Flavour is interesting, modest hoppy bitterness over a mild brown ale like base, lingering leafy green hops. Pleasant, very well balanced. I would like more assertive hops but you might lose a bit of the drink-ability that way. 7+ Fairly mild aroma, light green hops, muted malt. 6+ Average palate suits it. 7/4/7/3/15 On tap at Volo, Toronto

On tap at Volo. Pours a clear dark orange/brown with modest-sized head. Aroma is moderate citric hops, dark malt. Flavour is similarly modest citric cops and caramel/chocolate maly - does in fact taste like a brown ale crossed with an IPA. Average bitterness in finish. Nice.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at volo. Clear dark brown/amber pour. Burnt malt and earthy aroma with a citrus. Smooth medium mouthfeel. Flavour is slightly sweet caramel and burnt malt, little bitterness and sour grapefruit finish. Not overpowering by any stretch. Nice balance. Really nice offering from Welly.
