Heathen (502), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Jul 2, 2008 THOUGHTS: I was waiting to try this for a little while. Smells lovely, but the flavor is just OK at first, but it did get better at it warmed. Banana is stronger in the aroma early and wear in flavor then reverses as it warmed.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, medium amber with a small to nonexistent , off-white head that quickly diminished. The aroma was light nutty malt, but mostly banana. The initial flavor was light to moderately sweet and lightly acidic; while the finish was light to moderately sweet and bitter with an average duration. There was banana then kind of nutty malt, then some more banana at the end once it warmed up a little then some bitter hops. The light to medium body was oily up front and dry in the back with tingly carbonation and a light to moderate finish.
beervis (214), People’s Republic of Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, England Aug 27, 2008 Banana evident in flavour and aroma, in a more substantial way than in a hefe. Spicy hops and a malty base complement it nicely. Smooth palate, satisfying. Unusual but very drinkable - I’d passed it over previously and dismissed it as a gimmick but actually rather liked it. mulletman69 (10), USA Aug 26, 2008 smells and tastes great, can def taste the bannana, and also an in your face beer taste... def not a traditional fruit beer... awesome will say there is alot of alcohol on the finish... when u first start drinking it its liek they added 99 bannanas to a yeungling or something brigg (125), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Aug 23, 2008 (bottle) First banana beer I’ve had. A thin, light brown head and copper body. The ripe banana aroma hits me as soon as its poured. The flavor is banana with some sweetness, but it dries out a little on the way back. Banana and spice lingers long in the aftertaste. sstackho (249), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 22, 2008 500mL bottle purchased for $5 from Bauer Wines in Boston. Pours a clear medium gold, with lots of bubbles but little head. I just finished off the rest of my toddler’s banana after putting him to bed. Will that make this judgment better or worse? It’s a decent malt aroma, but sadly I’m not getting any banana. And this IS a banana beer, after all. After the first sip, I’m having trouble figuring out what banana tastes I have are coming from the beer vs the banana I just ate. Pretty sure that little burp right that was from the real banana. I suppose this means that I can make any beer a banana beer by eating a banana before it, and I won’t have to pay $5 for the privilege! Subsequent tastes are getting better as the flavours become more distinguishable. Banana flavours - more direct and less subtle than a hefeweizen. I gave my wife a blind tasting, and she noted heavy banana flavours - perhaps because she doesn’t much care for the fruit. A fun beer.
Berno (3), , Illinois, USA does not count Aug 13, 2008 Smells exactly like banana nut bread. Fairly bitter and there’s way too much alcohol on the finish.
