Typical pasteurised flavour of a British bottled ale. Light, creamy caramel notes which are quite pleasant. It’s a gold colour, but it’s a fairly standard bitter with none of the features of a blond ale (no wheat, no American hops, no lager hops, no lean lager character). It’s a golden bitter. It’s sort of biscuity and gentley sweet and quite pleasant, with a modest hop note. It’s not a great beer, but it’s not terrible either. [2.5]
Jan, 2008 Delicate beers (which are not always "weak" beers) don’t do well with pasteurising. The boiled sweets flavour comes through, and the hops have the fragrance knocked off them so they simply become blunt and bitter. The aroma is boiled sweets, oak chips and -as maeib says - vomit. It’s a flat, lifeless beer of no interest whatsoever, and so many flaws and off flavours you wonder what the intention was. I suspect that Wells & Youngs are trying to get in on the interest in Golden beers, but haven’t quite understood it’s not just about the colour. [2.3] Sammy (4070), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Grassy and minty, medium-strong pungent "euro" hops - sort of catty and reeky, but fresh. Taste is mostly grassy, a hint of honey with the grainy malt, mildly bitter finish. Light bodied, weakly carbonated, the malt fades quickly, but it’s dry and refreshing enough, a little funky in the back-end. Radek Kliber (4001), Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), Ontario, Canada

Aroma is on the mild side, light grassy hops. (6+) Flavour is mild, palt malt and grains, hoppy bitterness, grass and straw. Light muddled background note that I initially think is a touch of skunk from the clear glass, but perhaps not. Average to thin bodied palate. Grows on me a bit but it just doesn’t have a lot going on over all. A refreshing golden ale, alive with English marketing! Bottle from the LCBO Fin (3495), Merton, Oxfordshire, England

Like ’Berkshire John’ I was rather underwhelmed by this offering. It poured a very nice golden colour with a decent if quickly fading white frothy head. Some hops on the nose and despite the company jargon I didn’t find this to be particularly crisp and zesty, it was edging that way but it seemed a little limp and lazy, ok but much better out there. blankboy (3263), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 20, 2008 Bottle. Pours a clear, bubbly golden-orange with an average size diminishing fizzy white head. Aroma: First thing noticeable is some skunkyness (stupid clear bottles!) then grassy hops and malt -- not much else, maybe some honey. Flavour of grassy hops backed by grainy malt and an average bitter finish. Light to average bodied. It’s O.K. but somewhat simple, there’s not much going on here -- still, take away the skunkyness and it’s an alright beer. RichardGretton (3166), Leicestershire, England
