| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 27, 2009 Bottle. Quality pour -- thick and mahogany, with a thick substantial head. The aroma is a bit surprising, given the dark hue -- light and airy, like fresh baked bread. Exceptionally smooth, with a nice nutty undercurrent, this is a prototypical bitter, the perfect session beer. (#3686, 9/27/2009) Fratto (704), Arlington, Texas, USA

The taste just didn’t live up to the hype or the appearance. I think I will need to try this one again. BeerChaser0078 (321), Melbourne, Australia
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Sep 13, 2009 500ml Bottle. Pours clear light copper with a small beige head that dissipates fairly quickly. Very little, almost nonexistent aroma, just a mild whiff of malt. Flavour is more substantial with slightly bitter malt and hops, caramel and a hint of raisin toast. Nothing overly exciting, just a standard, mainstream, by-the-numbers ale, but having said that, it’s still easy to drink. jjuf1853 (471), Land O Lakes, Florida, USA

| 1.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 2/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | Sep 5, 2009 [500ml bottle at Tara & Ian’s - cheers!] I’m not a big fan of the flavour of the cask version of this, so I wasn’t exactly looking forward to the pasteurised version. It pours a rather lifeless and unappealing copper colour. Fizzy, with a fast fading white head. There’s a little earthy malt in the flavour, but it’s really just a weak, watery mess of minerals and pasteurised metallics. There’s no substance or self belief in it. At least the cask version has the guts to stand up and shout that it’s proud of it’s unusual flavour - this simply tries to hide it. Can’t believe they advertise this muck as the "Drink of England", it can’t be doing much to help promote our beer industry abroad. I wonder if I can get Camra to sue Wells for misrepresentation...
