sstackho (198), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 2, 2008 500mL bottle purchased from LCBO in Grimsby. Pours a dark brown with a bit of head. Aroma is all malt and sweet. The flavour follows similarly. It’s all malt with a bit of sweetness. Seems appropriate for the style, though it’s not really my thing.
Ughsmash (2814), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Jul 17, 2008 Bottled, BB 3/18/09. Poured clear, brilliant reddish-tea with a short-ish cap of beige head. The aroma picked up toasted caramel, nutty notes, and chocolate.. dry with a fresh herbal accent.. lovely! The flavor had a toasty impression with sweeter bread, aged caramel, and cola.. the back-end had brighter grassy and herbal bitterness that carried through the dry finish. The body was a bit lighter than expected and could’ve used more heft across the middle.. otherwise very well balanced with a memorable, dry finish. I could drink a whole lot of this. bermod (81), Lappeenranta, Finland Jul 16, 2008 Sweet syrupy aroma of roasted malts, chocolate and hops. Very sweet syrupy flavor is roasted malts, coffee, some chocolate and hops. MakeItDrinkIt (50), Portland, Oregon, USA Jul 11, 2008 Deep ruby brown hue with a thin light tan head. Aroma is rich roasted grains, toffee - dark cherries and plums abound. Flavor is a very nice mouthful of raisins, dark cherries, black strap molasses and dark rum. This is a really fine dopplebock, one of the best I have had. Finish is lingering, slightly syrupy. after4ever (1632), Brier, Washington, USA Jul 9, 2008 500. Pours nearly black with a towering, sudsy tan head. Decent lace on the way down. Big bready and cookie-dough-ish nose. Chocolate, biscuit, and nuts there as well. Very pastry-like. Thin, watery body; very little carb. Sweet cookies, chocolate, brown bread, and biscuit and nuts all coming back around for the mid-palate. It’s so understated as to almost go right by you without making much of an impression, but it’s beautifully done and to be commended. Not sure how often I could drink this...I definitely prefer a bit more amplification in my beers, usually. douglas88 (610), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Jul 3, 2008 Updated: Jul 7, 2008Bottle thanks to Eric. Pours a ruby body with a medium beige head. The aroma is full of sweet fruits, malt, and some candy. The taste exhibits many qualities of a good bock; caramel and molasses sweetness, dark fruity flavors, a touch of alcohol warmth, a smooth easy mouthfeel, and a light bitter finish. Very good. Sweet, but not too sweet.
