3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: JUL 21, 2013 500ml bottle (7:4:8:4:13=3.6)
Dark brown in colour, light brown head. Hugely rich malty nut aroma, sweet rye bread even. Well-balanced bitter, and very nutty, details over a full, yet refreshing malty body.
500ml bottle (7:4:7:4:14=3.6)
Very sweet, but a nice caramelly aroma, So much a malt drink, and a lovely dry nuttiness. Full palate, in particular as it warms, it fills out wonderfully. As you Finish reminds you of the sweet malty body, but has the nice dry nut-paperiness too. Very nice beer - love the old dry nuttiness.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
From Bottle. Poured reddish brown. Huge foamy looking caramel head. Aroma was nicely blended scents of toffee, caramel, dark fruits, malt. Flavors again meshed very well, not overbearing. Chocolate, malt, toffee, tiny fruit hints, with a nice lingering sweet toffee-ish aftertaste. Medium bodied. Well-balanced. Excellent dunkel.

Very enjoyable beer, especially served in the dimpled mug. Not overly strong, but a nice dark fruits flavour is apparent

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a cloudy red-brown. Head is large and khaki. Aroma is toffee, caramel, spiced pit fruits and lightly of smoke/savory stew. Texture is medium. Flavor is pit fruit malt, coffee, chocolate, toffee, caramel, beef stock, peat and smoke. Very complex, but never heavy, oily or strong. Superbly balanced and "just right". About halfway through the bottle I broke out crackers and smoked gouda. Not typical for me to eat with my beer. But I can just imagine being in Germany, pounding these with hamburgers, steaks and bbq chicken every meal. That’d be awesome.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle (from bitter virtue). Toffee and malt with dried fruit and nuts. Despite the sweet flavours it doesnt drink quite as sweetly as I would have imagined. Light roasty bitterness helps round it off. Quite nice.
