TAR (1998), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA Mar 19, 2008 Pale golden. Sticky big-bubbled white froth slowly disperses but shows nice retention. Hay dust, honeydew melon, minerals (salt, lead) and herbal hops line the delicate aroma. Tarnishing hints of toasted dough and husks. Soft carbonation sparkles on the palate. Well-textured malts dust the palate as a fairly vibrant honeydew and lemony fruitiness emerge alongside an herbal twinge of hops. Yeastiness bolsters the body as it fuses with malt-derived starches, coating the palate along the way before depositing a pistachio-like accent. The hops and malt, which are fairly clean, are obscured by the doughy yeast and graininess of the malt. Dainty malt sweetness evokes thoughts of fresh baked bread and also displays a feathery softness which allows the equally delicate and perfumey herbal and lime-peel bitterness to brightly exude. Hop character is much more flowery and herbal than spicy, though touches of aniseed are present throughout. Slightly metallic and salty finish reveals a lengthy malt afterimage which absorbs the underlying sharpness of the hops. Pilsner should be fragrant and refined, but I’m getting too much dough and huskiness which detracts from the malt and hop subtleties. Flavor and texture are also unfortunately weighed down by the omnipresent yeastiness as well as the toasted grains. Mediocre as a whole.
Beershine (1190), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Aug 6, 2008 Bright yellow with white foamy head. Cereal grain aroma with some phenols and grassy hops. Dry, dull and masculine but drinkable. RSRIZZO (987), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Jul 31, 2008 Aroma is a sweet grain scent with a hint of skunk. Color is a pale gold with a faint haze and very active carbonation and a thick white head. Taste is crisp and easy. Starting with a light body it goes down with a crisp clean feel. Finish is a slightly sweet malt and corn taste then a faint hop flavor and some bitterness. After taste is clean with more bitterness. Overall this is a very good Pilsner.
