Commercial Description:
Our monthly beers for 2007 feature elements of the brewing process continuing with Copper Hop, our beer for May. At the end of the mash, the liquid extracted is a viscous, sugary solution known as ‘wort’. This is pumped to the copper – a heated tank used in the same way (and sometimes referred to) as a kettle. The wort is then boiled with hops – this first batch being known as copper hops and the acids extracted being alpha acids which give bitterness to the finished beer. The later additions of hops are known as aroma hops, their essential oils giving flavour and aroma to the beer. A copper-coloured beer to go with one of the most traditional copper hops (Fuggles) with a malt grist of pale, crystal, wheat and specialist malts to give a soft malt flavour and a floral, fruity hop finish.

Cask hand-pump at the Hobgoblin, Reading. Brilliantly clear copper colour with a trace of a beige head, an excellent looking pint; floral and citrus aromas; an immediate citrus bite when first tasted, with sweet orange and grapefruit flavours; then a refreshing lightly bitter finish. A great beer for early summer.
