Commercial Description:
Cask; A rich dark porter for the festive period with seasonal herbs, spices and fruit. At 4.5% this is an ideal brew to sup with your feet on the hearth of the Tap Room fire and the smell of woodsmoke and the fire’s glow for company. The West Berkshire Brewery has brewed Spiced Porter since its first year of trading and it is now firmly established as a seasonal Christmas beer. Flavoured with dark malts and several spices and varied each year to make the brew just a little different – see if you can pick out this year’s spices. The chimney sweep is thought by some to be a traditionally lucky visitor at New Year when a dark-haired man should be first across the threshold – being covered in soot we assume that a chimney sweep will fit the bill admirably. Good health for your Christmas or Solstice celebrations and good luck for the New Year.

Cask gravity at the Tewkesbury Winter Ale Festival, 02/02/2008. A fantastic flavour with roasted malt, cinnamon and clove. Somewhat sweet. Very enjoyable.

Cask conditioned at The 3B’s, ReadingAn intense reddish black colour, with an off-white head; a malty aroma; rather thin in the mouth, the spices are quite subtle, I think I picked out cinnamon; a pleasantly dry and warming after taste.

Cask conditioned @ Hobgoblin, Reading. Ginger spicy mulled aromas with more subtle roasted malt. Slightly spicy and sweet. Pleasant enough but there doesnt seem to be enough balance for the sweet spicy flavours.

Cask Conditioned at The Rose & Crown, Charlbury, Oxon. Brown red with thin head. Certainly a very spicy beer, cloves and cinamon come to mind, but with a thinnish background. Would have liked a darker roast malt, but decent all the same.
