Dark red, dense fleshed, with anise over-tones, Kingston Black is perhaps the most well known but least tasted English cider variety. It is frequently described, with the term ‘legendary’ usually tacked on, as the most wine-like of ciders. The aroma, the most intense we have encountered, gives credence to that claim. It is very full bodied, with a deep golden hue. This year’s was fermented with wild yeast, giving it an earthy character unusual in our ciders, then blended with thirty percent Golden Russet.

Golden hue, very little carbonation. Aroma is reminiscent of apple crumble, the butter and the oats are both there, along with baked apple and a hint of airborne tartness. First sip is of earth and funk but finishes awful grainy. This is maybe the most beer tasting cider I’ve had based upon the breadiness in the finish. Not sure if this is something I like or not, and definitely not anywhere near as good as neighboring Farnum Hill’s take on the KB apple. Serviceable but not a repeat for me.

750 mL bottle. Aroma gives a nice wash of soft butter caramel and Apple pie. Flavors are fun and ranging, like a light ice cider, with some age. There is this vague sense that the apples froze or softened, which I can’t decide is good or bad. Where this cider fails is.in texture. There’s no turn, no snap, no bite, just a flabby fade. Entered from my mobile device.

UPDATED: AUG 31, 2009 Bottle. Head is initially small, fizzy, white, fully diminishing. Body is medium yellow. Aroma is notes of apples, wood/stems, hint of plastic. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, fizzy carbonation. Simple but flavorful. Don’t get much of the wild yeast.

Golden color with mild carbonation. Aroma is solidly tart and tannic fall apples with some light sweetness. Flavor has a nice fresh apple taste with a light apple bite. Good cider overall.
