The Angry Monk doesn’t really fit into a specific beer category or meet specific style guidelines. Therefore it is what it is – which is to say that it displays a very Belgian character due to the yeast strain. You may notice that this beer is very different from our St. Marks Dubbel. That is because we use an entirely different yeast strain for this one. The aroma is heavy on the caramelized banana side with a dash of licorice. We don’t filter the Angry Monk, nor any of our other Belgian-style beers, however, one distinguishing characteristic of this particular yeast strain is that it is highly flocculating which means it leaves the beer very clear and bright without sacrificing any flavors.

Clear, orange with small, lacing head. Estery aromas play through the taste. Fairly light body. Ends fairly clean, though a bit metallic on the finish.

Tap at WFB, amber-brown with a thin lacing head, a little demerara and banana on the nose. Toffee and a little grapefruit on the palate, a little burnt caramel, sweet but not overly so for a Belgian brown. An interesting US-Belgian fusion.

August 11th, 2013 - West Flanders’ Angry Monk is colored with one might expect to be the fevered, red ruddy cheeks of an ill-tempered Belgian monk, but it has all the awkwardness of one too. The aroma is exceedingly soapy, maybe tainted, or maybe that’s part of the recipe, but it only barely lifts enough to catch the other scents of light caramel and some crystal malt. The flavor is boozy, bullying up front with heavy alcohol notes, and follow-up tastes of strawberry and banana. The palate is thin and wan, but the flavors, as discombobulated as they are, aren’t too bad.

Tap at West Flanders. Pours hazy orange with white head. Aroma of baking spices, citrus, caramel. Taste is very bitter, pepper, long bitter finish, light to medium bodied. Meh.

Growler from a trade. From notes. Forgot about this one. Pours a clear dark amber with a red hue and a finger of off-white head. Aroma of bready yeast, toffee and nuts. Taste is light bitter and follows aroma with some light herbal hops and caramel. Medium bodied with a slightly slick textures lively carbonation and a decently longs finish. Overall, not bad. If I lived in Boulder I would probably frequent this place. Very good.

Draft at the brewery with TheDude. Pours a hazed golden color with white head. Aroma of odd belgian yeast, some sugar, odd sickeningly sweet fruit. Flavor is cloying. Very cloying. In fact, if I were asked to define cloying I would give them this beer. So very sweet. Sweet like odd old fruit and sugar. Lots of alcohol towards the finish. Nope.

Draft. Sweet tobacco and unripe red plum and strong banana and caramel with a sloppy, goopy malt texture. Ugh. Sugary, sweet, acidic, dirty, rotting fruit with a flabby, thin, watery body. Horrible. Sweet, stew-y caramel banana mush of a beer.

On tap @ West Flanders. Hazed amber pour with an off-white head. Sweet banana, caramel, and brown sugar on the nose. A touch of herbs and spices. Water, tart lemon, and metal. Flavor is overripe banana, metal, and herbs. Sweet caramel, toast, and yeast. Water, dates, and lemon on the finish.
