West’s signature Munich-style lager beer. Carefully selected imported ingredients create a crisp and clean beer with satisfying malt sweetness, complimented by delicate hop bitterness.

Aroma: Clean but weak cereal aroma.

Appearance: Clear pale golden body with a loose white head. Average carbonation. Light lacing.

Taste: Roast malt and yeast flavours. Slightly nutty and vegetable notes. Quite a ’deep’, sweet flavour for a lager.

Palate: Thin body with a watery texture. Light carbonation.

Overall: One of the most flavoursome lagers I’ve tasted.

*Old rating. Best before 10.08.11. Nice fresh grainy beginning. Smooth and grainy with nice floral hops. Moderate bitter finish with a nice floral aftertaste. Nice for a Pale Lager.

Keg at The Market Tavern, Durham, £4.80/pint. Standard looking amber pale lager with a foamy white head and lively carbonation. The nose is sweetish and slightly buttery. The taste is overly sweet and reminds me of beer that has been left in the sun too long and takes on an unpleasant flavour. I don’t see why this is ranked as a top class lager.

Pale straw golden, decent white cap. Nose is grainy sweet, more straw than grassiness but fairly crisp - as is the initial taste. Damp bread, softly sweet and crisp enough crusty malt to soak that up. Not overly firm carbonation, as much as you need, and a lean veggy/herbalised finish to round things off. Not a world beater and I’m having it "fresh from the source" but normally if somewhere is serving this alongside other less illustrious pale lager company, they’ll have some Williams Bros options tucked away too.

Bottle. Pours a clear golden beer with a small white head on top. Aroma has some skunk in there, light grainy base and not much else. Flavour is light sweet, thin and fairly uninteresting. Short, almost no aftertaste. Light prickly carbonation.

Draught at The Taybank. Clear yellow with good lacing. Light grassy aroma. Cereal flavour is most dominant, better than the other lagers on offer.

Keg tap at the Grain & Hop Store, Cambridge. Pale to medium uninspiring yellow. Grassy, cereal-y uninspiring but decent aroma. Tastes ok. The sweetness balances out any lagery lemony bitter-sour, and there’s none of that macro-lager industrial cleaner taste. Not great but decent.

Pours a clear, a bit darker shade of golden color, topped with an average sized white frothy head. Malty aroma, with some grainy and grassy notes. Taste starts with some sweetness, malty with some grassy notes. Light with mild bitterness in the finish. Not bad at all.

Bottle from Booths, Media City. Golden with a carbonation and next to no head. A stated enough lager if you enjoy this style, nothing special if you don’t.
