3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 BlackWarrior (173) - Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA - MAY 19, 2013
Huge thick, tan head - a gusher. slowly it dissipated and the eventual discovery of the dark brown beer looked good. A fairly big pine nose came up along with rosemary/lavender, dried leaves, roasted malt and espresso. Light body body that is both smooth and crisp. Dark roasted flavor is the base - think french roast/espresso. Along with the big hops and you’ve got a fairly dry/bitter beer. A sipping beer, for sure and if you enjoy dark roasted bitternes it’s your game, then you’ll love this. Well made, but not really my style.

Bottle purchased from Craft Beer Co, Brighton, back in August and shared around this Christmas. Black with a very large, bubbly head that sticks around. Sweetened, toasted, complex aroma of coffee, very hoppy, perhaps some liquorice and wood fire. Very bitter, dry, smoked wood taste. Heavy - very much a sipping beer. Difficult to pick out all the flavours - some liquorice, some cocoa, mostly bitter malt. Very good but lacking the balance or smooth mouthfeel to make it exceptional.

(Bottle) Pours dark, dark brown with a large and creamy, nougat coloured/pale brown head. The aroma holds minty and rosemary-like herbs alongside dark grainy bread. Undertones of liquorices, asphalt, light coffee, light cocoa, pine, grapefruit, black currant, juniper, whisper of canned pineapple and maybe some red berries. The flavour is light sweet, medium bitter and tiny acidic with a quite robust roast and grapefruity/resinous/piny/herbal hops alongside salt liquorice and a tiny touch of fruits. The mouthfeel is soft and tart (from the hops) with a medium to full, fizzy carbonation. Aggressive hop finish with a nice roasted sting. Near medium bodied.

Smell is very tiny sweet, earth and herbal with roasted malts, rosemary, moist soil, menthol, funnel chanterelle, spicy wood, grapefruit peal, dark roast coffee, black pepper, dark bread, crackers and hints of plums and dark grapes. Taste is very tiny sweet, bitter and herbal with crackers, pumpernickel, ammonium chloride, dry peppery wood, dark roast coffee, grapefruit rinds, car tire rubber, pine, moist soil, green grapes, asphalt, black pepper, soy sauce, lemon balm, pine and resin. Mouthfeel is slightly dry, tiny oily bitter, tiny astringent and light to medium bodied. Finish is bitter, herbal and spicy with roasted malts, grapefruit peal, pine, black pepper, salty liquorice, soy sauce, dry soil, peppery wood, lemon balm and hints of asphalt. Very pleasant!
