COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark Helmet is a German-style black lager (or Schwarzbier) brewed with 10% malted rye. Chocolate and Carafa malts give this beer its dark color and ludicrously smooth, roasty flavor. May the Schwarz be with you!

Solid black body with bubble beige ring head. Fresh compost nose with fig sweet highlights. Despite a decent undercurrent of carbonation this is a sooth a sipping Schwarz as Iíve enjoyed. Initial wrap of molasses and cream with the softest coffee. An initially shy roast shimmys onto the palate. Subtle and grainy at first, but thick leathery bitter whips on the finish. Carbonation leaves a mild dryness more picnic table wood than anything too offensive.

From 22oz bomber. Pours a dark brown with tan head. Deep. Aroma was roasted malt, dark fruit, coffee and caramel. Taste followed and was silky smooth. Coffee upfront, creamy toffee and bitter on the end. Rye was a nice touch.

Bottle from Sweet Grass Dairy. Deep brown almost black pour with a small bubbly white head. Aroma of roasted malts, light cocoa and touches of smokiness and prunes. Roasted malt, light chocolate, with touches of smoke and a metallic, alkaline ending. Light in body, prickly carbonation and very drinkable. Not bad.

Bottle. Pours dark Brown. Iím a wee bit surprised by this one. Obviously the reference to Space Balls is excellent but I paid a lot of money for this bottle and it was a pretty underwhelming experience. I could have bought about 5 equally tasty Czech Tmavys for the same price. Iím surprised that Ratebeer backs up itís lofty price with an impressive score. I might be being a bit unfair. It was after all, very nice but Iím awash with Tmavyís here and this one is comparbale and by no mean spectacular.

Bottle shared by RussianDragon. Near black body, appearing mahogany at the edges. Small tan collar that leaves a touch of lacing in its wake. Aromas of chocolate, char, smoke - though not on the level of a rauchbier. Dark toast, a hint of dark fruit. Lager yeast and rye bread come in mid to late palate. Solid.
