COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A rarely seen German beer style, Lichtenhainer is a sour wheat beer brewed with 40% beechwood smoked malt. Tart and refreshing with an intriguing bacon/ham aroma.

Hazy amber with little visible head, aroma is pungent smoke with a light sour fruitiness lingering. Sour cherries and hay present too. Taste is like a three course meal in reverse - sweet and sour strawberry sherbet and wild kick to begin, before the smoke mellows it out into savory liquorice malt before finishing with a smoked cheese finish that keeps on going. Very generous in duration and sheer quantity of flavour delivered, though clearly not for everyone. It remains an expertly crafted and imaginative beer though.

22 oz bottle from the good man nearbeer, who I met up with on a family trip to Knoxville. 22 oz bottle poured into a Green Flash tulip. Cloudy brass yellow with effervescent white head. Head disappears to nothing, but quickly comes back with a bit of swirling. Nose is tart mid citrus sweetness. Lots of flavors moving around on this one. Bit of tart, saltiness, vinegar bite, smoke. My wife says "Tastes like meat!" Thanks for a great bottle to bring back from an adventure.

Yellow-hazy, 1 finger head. Smells like smoked saussages, smokey. Taste: Salty, sweet, smokey, berliner weisse taste, sour. Light body with a average aftertaste. Like a normal berliner weisse but smoked. Piked up @ Erzbierschof in Bern.

Bottle (bomber) from bierkompass.de. Shady golden, medium white head. Strong smoked bacon and sausage aroma, some fruity notes lurking behind. Light in body, medium to high carbonation. Dry with soft acidity, disturbing lingering smokeiness. Would probably have loved this without the smoke.

Bottled, thanks oh6gdx! Hazy pale golden. Citric tart nose with some butter and mild buttery smoke. Light bodied, tart and citric with spritzy mouthfeel. Slight bacon and rubber. Refreshing, yet flavourful.

Poured with a decent white head although it didn’t last long. Color was around a four on the color scale with a hint of an orange tint as well as a nice aroma. Smoke flavor was a bit overpowering but the sour wheat was present enough to get a solid taste with a medium mouth feel. As far as the complexity and uniqueness of this beer goes for what it is, it’s top notch. As for my personal taste, I was unable to finish. Don’t get me wrong, I like sour beers and I like smoke beers but, not rolled into one

On tap at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2012. It pours an unclear, orange-yellow body and a small, white head. There’s a light smoke touch in the aroma, which is mostly wheat-ish and citrusy. Pleasant but a bit boring. The same goes for the flavor, with a nice bitterness lurking in the background. Citrusy, lemony mostly, with some smoke notes and wheat. Tart, medium-bodied and thin. Citrus peel in the finish. Although a bit boring, it’s certainly easy drinking and quenching. 120511

10/11/12/12/9/12

Draft. A hazy golden beer with a lazing yellowish head. The aroma has notes of smoke, malt, and hops. The flavor is sweet with notes of lemons, as well as lighter notes of smoke and malt, leading to a dry and slightly tart finish.

Bottle, thanks OSCF. Lots of meat and smoke in nose, some lemon notes. Similar slightly sour and acidic flavor, light cereal, smoked ham. Drinkable but this style is still growing on me.
