A rarely seen German beer style, Lichtenhainer is a sour wheat beer brewed with 40% beechwood smoked malt. Tart and refreshing with an intriguing bacon/ham aroma.

Odd brew from Westbrook, so you gotta give them some credit on the curiosity factor alone. But it drinks pretty well, too, the smoke and sour creating a surprisingly tasty combination that reminds me of Carolina-style vinegar-based barbecue sauce. Whether that’s good for a beer or not remains open for debate, but this brisk, smoky little tart brew seems to argue strongly in the For column. It’s not pretty beer, and could use a little more carbonation to keep the smoke from growing oppressive as the beer warms. Whatever the fuck that means. And, yes, it does smell a lot like ham. Tasty regardless, and more proof that Westbrook really, really knows how to handle sour beer.

Courtesy of thagr81us, thanks Calton! Wedding week beer! This one pours a light bodied and cloudy peachy gold in color. The nose is both lightly tart and has plenty of hammy aromas. It’s very hammy. The flavors are truer to the style with light tartness, citrusy acidity, with a more mellow ham presence. It’s nice and interesting. I’m glad there is a lemony, citrus presence to combat the smoked beechwood malt. It drinks light but being in a bomber, I don’t think I could finish off a bottle by myself. This was another good effort from Westbrook.

(Bottle) Pours cloudy yellow to pale golden with an off-white head. The aroma holds smoked meat, citrus/lemon and dough/bread yeast up front with undertones of minerals, tart fruits, tart berries, spices/dried herbs, hay, crackers and a touch of dirty horse. The flavour is dry, tiny bitter and medium to heavily acidic with notes of citrus, smoke and wheat. The mouthfeel is watery and tart with a medium carbonation. Citric, light mineral-like and subtle smoky finish. Light bodied.

Bomber bought @ Bierkompass.de. Pours hazy pale golden with a small fizzy white head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace. Smell is slightly sweet with smoke, unripe pears, lemon juice, gooseberries, lemon zest, hay, wood, smoked ham, peat, green apples and apple cider vinegar. Taste is sour with lemon juice, grapefruit juice, grape juice, lemon zest, hay, smoked sausage, burnt wood, green apples, unripe pears, crackers, cereal, unripe currants and gooseberries. Mouthfeel is dry, tart and light bodied. Finish is sour and tart with crackers, lemon juice, hay, bacon, unripe pears, green grapes, unripe currants, smoke and wood. Strange but good...
