4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
12/II/14 - 1Pt. 6Fl. Oz. bottle as "Bourbon barrel" @ De Hopduvel (Gent) - bottled: 6/VI/13 or VI/6/13 (2014-185) Thanks to Bobochamp for sharing the bottle!
Clear dark brown beer, no head, just a few bubbles floating atop the beer. Aroma: oh my, the vanilla is big on this one! But other stuff as well, bourbon, alcohol, caramel, fudge, brownie, lots of dried fruits, dark chocolate, ginger bread (actually more like "peperkoek" for the Dutchies) probably because of the cinnamon, but itís more spicy and complex than just cinnamon. MF: nice soft carbon, full body. Taste: immediate hot burn from the peppers on the tongue, lots of peperkoek (ginger bread), pretty sweet and malty, molasses, chocolate (both milk and dark), vanilla, spices. Aftertaste: more ginger bread ("couque de Dinant"), cinnamon, spices, hot pepper, chocolate, some mocha, caramel. Holy bimbam, this is good stuff!!!

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: APR 14, 2014 This beer has officially grown on me. I recapped the 1/3 of the bottle that was left and opened it this morning and itís actually really fucking complex, sweet and cinnamony and vanilla and cocoa. It really captures the spirit of "mexican chocolate cake" in a way I didnít appreciate last night, maybe because of some of the other beers I had around it, maybe because I wasnít in the mood, who knows, but I admit I was wrong.

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Aroma: Huge sweet chocolate dessert, wood, hints of pepper spice and vanilla
Appearance: Pitch black with dirty brown head
Taste: Semi-sweet chocolate, peppery heat, alcohol, vanilla
Palate: Warm pepper hits the mouth and combined with the alcohol gives a numbing sensation. Full mouthfeel, a bit chewy.
Overall: Excellent, dessert in a bottle. Nicely integrated and extremely smooth finish with the peppers adding in a good amount of heat. Out of all 3 BA varietals the pepper heat seems the most apparent in this one.

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle: thanks, Brian! Black, oily, thick, with a deep tan head that plumes up slowly & fades out rather quickly. Aroma is enormous; huge cinnamon, graham cracker, vanilla, sweet cocoa, caramel covered cherries, brown sugar, very light boozy aspect. Some coconut. Reminds me of liquid Cinnamon Toast Crunch with notes of caramel cherries & Almond Joy. Sweet, delicate, outstanding. Taste is very smooth & sweet with notes of vanilla, more Cinnamon Toast Crunch, brown sugar, cherry & plum fruitiness, smooth boozy notes (though not distinctively Jack Daniels), wet oak, & finally some chili pepper spice in the finish. Actually quite tingly, especially by the end of the glass. Lots of sweet cherry, vanilla, plum, coconut & cinnamon grows with warmth. Outstanding complexity, just a joy all around. Takes the regular Mexican Cake to a whole new level. Bravo!

UPDATED: AUG 27, 2013 Thanks to catatlatlanta for hooking us up; jrob21/eriteusink a pleasure; Mex Cake Set. Pours as one would expect thick black, thinner mocha head. Notes that distinguish it from the original and the rest of the set would be that the bourbon sweetness perfectly complements the heat and sweet of the base. I mean vanilla/bourbon sweetness is just super nice. Coffee really takes a back seat in this the barrel aged versions. Highest rating to date and I think I am not getting caught in the hype train at all. Just an awesome and improved version to the original awesome brew. I would rank it the best treatment out of the 3.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle at Bruceís in London - massive thanks to Paul for this guy. Pours black and thick like motor oil with a thick, tight brown cream head. Smells great, lots of rich chocolate, coconut, hints of torched wood. Medium to big sweet flavor with oily dark chocolate, moderate chili pepper, some slick coconut. Full bodied with average, creamy carbonation. Mellow warmth on the finish, restrained peppery heat, a bit of toffee and coconut, slightly syrupy chocolate. Rich, dynamic, balanced - wonderful beer.
