Westbrook’s Belgian Quadrupel was a short-lived member of its special collection, going on tap almost exclusively at the brewery and ostensibly disappearing. A brewery tour stop in the barrel room indicates that most of this puppy has been aging ever since, and here’s your chance to sample the results. The Mourvèdre wine barrel should complement the massive dark fruit and malt components of the Quad quite nicely.

Cask. Pours black with almost no head. Aroma is strongly smooth chocolate with fruit, spice and some oats. Flavour is a little less intense with some mild carbonation removing some flavour taste of chocolate woody textures provide a good base. Flavour nearly not as complex as aroma. Sweet finish with slight dryness.

10.1% abv. Very dark brown-red beer, good pale tan head. Light crisp palate, dry. Sweet and sour malts with nice vanilla oak barrel. Finishes dry. Nice contrast of sweet and sour.

On tap @ Copenhagen Beer Celebration. Pours a dark brown body with a big off-white head. Aroma is buttery doughy caramelized sweet tones, biscuits, hints of toffee, soy, wood and dark malts. Amazing in its near-pungent sweetness, which is beckoning without being over the top in any way. Man, this smells good! Taste is vastly complex: malty butterscotch-like tones with somehow still appear to end up as slightly tart (!), raisins, wood, toffee and hints of red berries. Complex interplay between sour, wine-like BA tones and doughy buttersweet notes from the quad. Smooth and nearly slick mouthfeel, moderate carbonation. A truly original concept which I thoroughly enjoyed - one of the very pleasant surprises at CBC. :-)
