This traditional Flanders-style sour red ale was aged for 2.5 years in red wine barrels. It is named in honor of a very energetic cardinal who used to fly around the outside of the brewery during the first half of 2011 when this beer was originally brewed.

A lot of different smells... Oaky. Some red wine. Raspberry. Musty Barrely smell,. A little strawberry. Appearance is reddish brown hazy. Head retention is nice. Taste is very complex. Oaky finish. Sour. Raspberry. Strawberry. A little light almost on the taste. A hint of malt on the finish as well. I dunno. I’m having a little love hate thing. It’s good in its own right...... A subtle fruitiness but the oakiness dominates.... But maybe that makes the fruitiness more appreciable. Some plum maybe. Palate is very sour. Great flavor development. Smooth. A really interesting beer. Excited to see a sour come from a small new brewery (and more excited to be a part of something after moving to South Carolina after living in Grand Rapids with founders..) lots of great flavors. Good for a special occasion. Check it out if you can grab a bottle.

Keg @ Brewvival 2014. Slightly hazy deep amber pour with a small off-white head. Tart red berries, raspberry on the nose. Some old pennies and driftwood. Toasty malt. Acidic red fruit skin flavor. Toasted wood and a bit of butterscotch candy sweetness. Penny jam. Medium body, moderate carbonation. OK.

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to Manny G. Pours lightly hazy amber with a creamy, mellow tan head. The nose holds moderate wet wood, old dried berries, earth and leather. Light sweet flavor with some assertive acidity, tart old berries, more well-worn leather. Light to medium bodied with average, spritzy carbonation. Lightly warming on the finish with good sour, leathery fruits, berried. Good stuff.

Bottle split at the Manny G tasting, big thanks to Manny G himself, 28/06/14. Murky chestnut brown/amber with a moderate beige covering. Nose is bitter dark fruit mash, light must, tangy stoned fruit peel, light dirt rinse, dry rot, rotting orchard and apple core, light dankness. Taste comprises tangy red berries, toffee apple, tarte fruit skins, sticky dates, light dank wood tones, mature dark fruits. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, tarte fruit close with subtle puckerings. Solid Flemish Red, fairly mellow and easy to drink, good balance and not too acidic.

Bottle thanks to MannyG. It pours deep red with a small yellow-white head. The nose is soft, wood, red berry, vanilla, jam and fruit compote. The taste is soft, fruity, red berry, mild acidity, jammy action, sherbet, wood and earth with a dry, lightly tart finish. Medium body and fine, prickly carbonation. Soft, fruity and pretty easy-going.

75 cl bottle. Bottled on 04.11.2013.
Pours dark mahogany color with a small head. Extremely nice sour fruity aroma, some yeast, faint gooseberry bush, spices and some wooden notes. Not so sour palate, ripe fruits, dark berry notes, mild gooseberries and yeast. Some malty notes, earth and wood. Not as aggressive flavor as I expected but still very nice, one might call this a pleasant sour ale. Excellent.
