Special Bitter Ale
A bitter to commemorate the year 1965 when the Black Eagle Brewery closed, Winston Churchill passed away and Robert Wicks was born. Brewed to a similar recipe that Bill Wickett used for his parting brew. Northdown hops give a clean, refreshing full bodied flavour for which English ales are famous. East Goldings for flavour and aroma.

Cask at the William Webb Ellis (JDW), Twickenham, 16/02/13. Clear dark golden amber with a medium sized bubbly off white head which retains well. Nose carries malts, caramel, toffee, light berry fruits. Taste comprises caramel, brown sugars, biscuit, background hops and fruits. Medium bodied with a little bite, moderate carbonation. Decent enough.

Cask. Slightly hazy amber with a small and creamy off-white head. Lightly sweet caramel in the nose combined with some greasy hops. Medium body, low carbonation, quite some odd phenols and a dry finish. Unspectacular. 190912

Small coarse offwhite head. Slightly hazy amber body. Resin and freshly cut wood aroma with floral wooden notes. Dry-sweet caramel and apple taste with resiny floral notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft, smooth mouthfeel. Dryish honey and apple aftertaste with floral fruity notes. Nice, smooth, and very drinkable. (0.25l cask at Charlie’s Bar, Copenhagen.)

Cask at Charlie’s Bar, Copenhagen. An amber beer with a thin orangey head. The aroma has notes of caramel and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of caramel, malt, and mettallic hops, leading to a dry finish.

Cask at the Wharf. It pours a clear, pale copper colored body and a small, light beige head. Biscuits, grapefruit peel, some resin and a faint vinegar touch. Don’t think the vinegar is intended, fear it might be a beer sitting to long in the cask after tapping, so didn’t deduct points for that. The flavor has pale malts, some hints of toffee, as well as citrus peel and a decent bitterness. Some vague vinegarish notes in the flavor too, but it’s not really sour. Soft, medium body. Decent bitterness in the end. A decent one, but not a favorite of mine. 111008

Cask at the Webb Ellis (JDW) in Twickenham, amber with fine clingy white head, spicy hops on the nose, the body is warming and dry, yet fruity and malty with hints of caramel and a clean dry-bitter aftertaste. Very nice.

The second of two Westerham beers I tried at JDWs in Hook, SW London. This was the better one, with some decent sweet malt character and a touch of caramel.
