KAggie97 (1886), Ugly, Hot, and Humid Spring, Texas, USA Mar 18, 2005 Nice malty balance coupled with slight caramel give this one a very drinkable and smooth-tasting character. Very enjoyable example of the style. bierkoning (4716), La Tropica, Netherlands May 18, 2006 Grapes, licorice and caramel in the aroma. Malty sweet flavor with a hint of toast. Touches of smoke and roast in the aftertaste. Thanks to MoritzF for this delicious bottle. Beer_Rules (237), San Marcos, Texas, USA Aug 11, 2005 Cool dark appearance with some ruby around the edges. Aroma was a bit muted, but got hints of toasted malt, spice, and herbs. Tasted a bit of chocolate, spices, and yeast. Didnt seem to have much of a roasty flavor that I would expect from this style. Nonetheless, it was pleasing. diabel (1197), Aarschot, Belgium Aug 20, 2005 Bottle Deep brown body. Off-white head. Interesting nose of malts (roasted coffee) and some spices. Moderately bitter, lightly sweet initial flavour. As the aroma was quite promessing, the flavour was disappointing. TChrome (1249), Bedford, Texas, USA Apr 6, 2005 Pours pretty dark brown, but clear and without all the yeast of the Franziskaner I consured before this one, with a well retained off white colored head. Aroma is more reminiscent of a good marzen, caramel and an aroma that I still refer to as "lagered", but without the banana and clove of most dunkels. Flavor is restrained with some light chocolate maltiness and a bit of yeast. Not a lot happening here, but at least it doesn’t suck. Not a dunke.
