3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 KajII (344) - Macon, North Carolina, USA - JUL 16, 2010
Bottle. Poured a dark murky brown with a tan fizzy head that was fully diminishing and had poor lacing. The aroma was heavy of roasted malts and molasses, light resin hops and a moderate scent of a horse blanket yeast. It tasted slightly malty and extremely bitter at first and ended with a bitter acidic flavor that layed in the back of your throat. Mouthfeel was light in body and watery in texture with a fizzy carbonation. Overall an OK brew, but nothing special.

Nice aroma of bread and caramel. Quickly disappearing brown head. Taste is nice... .medium sweetness, with normal caramel flavors. Not the best of the trappist beers, but compared to all beers a good choice.

Poured with a little too much head perhaps, but redeemed itself with a full smoky flavor that kicks you in the teeth. Exceptionally smooth finish. The monks continue to make outstanding beer.

330mL bottle. Pours hazy dark red with a large fluffy head that settles to a persistent covering. Aromas of banana, apple, spice, dark fruit and yeast. Subdued flavours, low bitterness, mild sweetness, some toasty and biscuity flavours and a slight acidity. Medium bodied, lively carbonation and a slightly starchy dry finish.

I really liked this one. Pours brown- blood red with light brown head. It’s aroma and taste are simply unique. Full malty taste with other spices and bitter end. Really enjoyable when you need to drink a dubbel and perhaps the best choice for me.

Bottle poured in Westmalle glass. Pours a very dark brown beer with a nice tanned head. Westmalle Dubbel is bottle conditioned so there is a lot of carbonation going on. My example had a distinct aroma of apples, it kind of surprised me since this is something I normally associate with Geuze Lambics. Taste is again apples at first and then the sweet, smooth taste of malt and raisins perhaps (?). Aftertaste lasts quite a while. Westmalle Dubbel is one of the best examples of a strong dark trappist ale. Just like their Tripel, the Dubbel is another winner from Westmalle. Highly recommended.

750ml shared with DarkBeerChick. Pours a deep, cola-colored body with a bubbly, tan head that leaves some good lacing. Aromas of candi sugars, Belgian yeast, dates, candied figs, raisin bread and some spicyness. Flavors of dark dried fruits, yeasty, some alcohol, bready and a bit of baker’s cocoa. Active, soft carbonation and a medium to full mouthfeel.

Aroma is sweet with raisins and molasses. Color is deep amber with some haziness. Slightly sweet with a slight bitter finish. Taste is a bit fruity with some nutty caramel. Lots of carbonation. Great dubbel!
