UPDATED: NOV 11, 2010 Bottle pours dark brown with large frothy off-white persistent head. Aroma dark fruits, malts and Belgian yeast. Taste dark fruits, spices, malts, yeast with minimally bitter finish. palate a bit thin. OK dubbel but it doesn’t put it all together.

UPDATED: JUL 8, 2010 Bottle 1993 and a earlier tasting of a bottle from 1982, kindly shared by Nnudd. What a treat. Pouring it made a small tan/yellow head that disappeared immediately, leaving a nice mahogany body. The aroma was quite dim, dominated by nuts, dark fruits and caramel. Tasting it was very interesting and what a nice flavour, so smooth and balanced with notes of nuts, dark fruit, wood and port. Unfortunately it was pretty thin bodied which ruined the overall impression a little bit, nonetheless it was still a fantastic beer.

Sampled at Vineyards in Ottawa (in 2004). Had a best before date on the bottle, 05/05/06. This trappist brew poured a dark amber-red colour with a nice creamy head that stayed a while. The alcohol was very noticable in the scent. I could also smell hints of pears and apples. The taste began with the strong alcohol and finished on the fruits mentioned above. Overall, pretty light in all departments for a trappist beer.

11.2 oz. bottle. Pours dark brown with a biege head that seems to last. Aroma of sweet fruit, caramel and malt. Taste is very smooth and very complex. Malty and fruity. Not too sweet. Hides the alcohol very well. Outstanding.

I’m very disappointed about this beer. I expected a lot more from this. Well starting: nice appereance, deep red-brown color, fizzy beige head. But after this, as i taste it, the fizzy carbonation and alcohol dominates everything. I can hardly feel some maltyness. Very unbalanced. Some unpleasent bitterness. I have to give time this to settle down. In the aroma, some spicy fruityness unfolds, then some dry prunes. It doesn’t work well at palate: the alcohol bite strong. PUNGENT.

33cL bottle, Trappist Tasting at Joe T.’s. Pours a murky, dark cola-brown color; medium-bubbled, light-tan head with decent retention and solid lacing. Brown sugar, caramel, and dark fruits in the aroma; nicely dry, spicy, with hints of cloves; quite nice. Medium body; lively carbonation; creamy, non-astringent, very light alcohol, if any; medium-high amounts of brown sugar, cloves, and caramel notes; some dried dark fruits, but nothing especially dark; minimal hops; nice clove and vanilla presence, it seems, from the yeast; slight vinous, warming alcohol, but light compared to the others recently sampled; lightly sweet, but attenuated well. Medium finish: cola, brown sugar, light spiciness; balanced ending.
