A reddish brown trappist ale, malty and fruit, featuring a 3 week secondary fermentation. This ale has a full, pale yellow head. The bouquet is full of esters and fruitiness. Notes of ripe banana predominate. The taste is fruity and slightly bitter, with a long, dry finish.

0.33 bottle. Alcohol in aroma, could feel some raisins and caramel notes. Dark brown with light brown (caramel) head. Light sweetness, lightly bitter, lightly sour... in other words complex taste. Medium body, average carbonation. A nice enjoyable beer.

From 33cl bottle. Almost black, fluffy white head, long lasting with lots of lacing. Aroma of bran, dark chocolate. Soft on the palate with only mild carbonation. Long lasting hints of nuts, burnt caramel. Well balanced, delicious ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A deep brown with garnet hi lights. A big foamy head like merange and appears to be nicely carbonated. Sweet malt with a nice fruitiness about it. Sweet malt taste like the aroma, with candied sugar, plums and dates. I’m not picking up much in way of hops. Bitter at end with a dry finish. Body wise I thought it felt a little thin around the edges but I’m not overly concerned. A very good tasting beer that gains in flavor as it warms. Nice lacing from the always present head. Cellar worthy I deem this beer good to the last drop.

UPDATED: AUG 15, 2014 Being Flemish, I grew up with this beer, as in my grandparents’ days it was practically the ’only’ trappist ale available in Flanders; the prototype of the ’dubbel’ genre and a classic among the Belgians. Tanned, mousse-like, delicately lacing foam, colour deep mahogany, misty; aroma of caramel, walnuts, banana, cloves, coffee grounds, liquorice, hazelnut paste, fondant; taste begins subduedly fruity with a subtle hint of citrus, quite sharp carbonisation, after which a deep caramel- and nut-like maltiness follows, perhaps a bit ’stiff’ and harsh when young, dryish, almost woody, yeasty with spicy accents, mineral-like touch, aftertaste leafy and somewhat peppery hops, lightly toasted, long and dry without any trace of cloying sugar, thirs-quenching. Becomes remarkably softer with ageing and I took this into account when scoring. Also one of the few trappists available on draft, then smoother and less ’harsh’ and in my opinion more rewarding than a young bottle. Such variations in taste depending on age and means of storage and serving only add to its potential.
