3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 12/20 dtborelli (322) - Sacramento, California, USA - JAN 30, 2010
Westmalle Trappist Ale
Dubbel 11.2 oz
Pours hazy brown with a medium creamy head that lasts a while. Oily on the glass. Aroma of malt and alcohol with a slight aroma of wood and raisins. Crisp, overwhelming mouthfeel due to all the bubbles. It kind of kills the flavor. Malty with some yeast and a sour finish. I was hoping for more
3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Sask89 (257) - Regina, Saskatchewan, CANADA - JAN 30, 2010
Pours a really dark brown almost black, with a big beige head. The aroma is of roasted malts a little nutty, caramel and some fruits like raisins, but it is slightly muted not overpowering. The taste is malty, nice and farily bitter too. Lively carbonation, good finish and it feels almost thick but also smooth on the palate. Very good beer, quite enjoyable.

Bottle. Hard to believe this is my first time drinking this brew. I was really missing out. This is a truly wonderful dark Belgian that holds its own with the likes of Roch 8 and Westy 8 and other classics.
The pour is alarmingly soda-like, with humongous bubbles on top and throughout the beer, but quickly those fade and you are left with a small ring of tight foam. The nose highlights wonderful sugars, including pear, rum, raisin, caramel, and sugar cane. Lovely, and all I could ask for out of a beer like this. The palate is bright and alive, bringing with it a complex rush of pumpernickel, licorice, raisin, cookie, and a brief molasses and hibiscus finish. Love it.

Bottle from Theatre of WIne, Greenwich. Dark brown pour with a beige long lasting head. Aromas of bananas, strawberries, candy sugars, lots of fruit. Nutty, malty, herby flavours. Malty, hoppy finish. Cracking stuff.

UPDATED: OCT 19, 2011 Fine beer to start your beerhuntership. Looks deep brown with a beautiful, yellowish foam layer on top. The foam is the first sensation for the mouth. Then comes the very smooth ale which is just a touch sweet, but very fruity as well. The percentage is just right. The dubbel was to be my favorite until the Tripel took first place. After a while, it tends to get too sweet for my taste, still it remains a great ale to degust. It has an all round taste and body, wholly satisfactorily and highly recommended.

Bottle, Nice brown color. Aroma is slightly fruity, raisin maybe, malty but subtle and not loud. Nice head, good flavor. Yep, like a good but not grear trappist beer. Good stuff.

( 75cl bottle) Pours extremely dark, lets no light through, has no head, but does coat my glass with some nice lacing. Smell of pumpernickel bread, sweet maltiness, nice yeast profile, and gingerbread. Taste of bready yeast, nice balance of sweetness and bitterness, with a slight bit of undercarbonation with good thickness. Tends towards sweetness versus bitterness.
