4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 DanVal2soon3 (6) - - NOV 13, 2011A mesmerizing beer to the eyes. Deep red/brown color with a fluffy, creamy, slightly tan tinged/off white head. Lots of toast and raisons in the nose; complex spiciness. Medium creamy texture with a dry, balanced finish. Little to no hop character yet beautifully balanced and quite dry. Overall an outstanding beer--when I think of what a dubbel should be this is the beer that comes to mind.

Brune foncée, fine mousse brun clair persistante. Maltée mais belle présence de houblon, texture huileuse, discrètement fruitée, caramelisée et rôtie, bonne pétillance et bel équilibre.

Bottle - aggressive pour. Very long lasting head of off while color and super tight bubbles. Dark and deep red color. initial aroma heavy on bread and malt with sour cherry finishing sweetly on the nose. Very reminiscent of the dubbel style. Mouthfeel is soft on the pallet; nice but expected a heavier body. Taste did disappoint at first with an almost cherry syrup on the first sip. Tons of carbonation, particularly upon second pour with a less aggressive pour. Afterword nice bread and malt notes with some dark fruit, mostly cherry. Overall, expected more from a dubbel, particularly from a Trappist. Woudja - Yes!
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Pavol (22) - Bratislava, SLOVAK REPUBLIC - MAY 15, 2013
Nice banana, citrus and roasted malt aroma, taste is a lot roasted than aroma, but it is balanced with some strong hops in the beginning, but short lasting, quite nice since i am not a big fan of dark beers..

330ml bottle from The Cave, Glasgow (£2.99):
Rich and complex smell that begins with some dark fruits such as plum, raisin and cherries. There is a strong and sweet caramel malt aroma that follows this along with some sugar, prunes, dates and figs with tiny amount of alcohol.
Murky brown with a hazy appearance and a thin, one centimetre tall, light brown head that that turns to a patchy lacing
Strong and sweet dark fruit taste to begin with all the same fruits from the nose making an appearance, particularly the figs, raisins and dates plus some cherries and sugar. There is some toffee malts and a warming, light alcohol taste next with a hint of yeast and some caramel malts.
Sweet & well carbonated, medium body and a rich, complex taste that has a very good balance. There is some nice spice towards the end and the alcohol, hidden for the most part, is only noticeable in places and compliments the drink well with a nice, warming finish to it.
Very complex yet well balanced beer that was quite rich from the get go and dominated by dark fruits and sweet malts throughout. A really nice one that takes a while to open up but once it does there is no looking back.

33cl bottle. A great dubbel. Very sweet taste of caramel/chocolate. Dry long aftertaste.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 Mr_Vogel (50) - NETHERLANDS - MAY 12, 2013
Nice dark colour, good head with average retention. Some flaky yeast bits sink to the bottom of the goblet. Complex aroma of fruits (plums and cherries), sweetness, malty caramel, chocolat and finally some yeasty banana. Fruitiness dominates, but this is actually very pleasant as it smells like ripe fruits. No chemical aroma whatsoever. The fruits and malts come back in the taste as well, but fruit no longer dominates. There is a smooth bitterness that sets the tone and harmonizes well with the sweet fruits and caramels. The beer feels creamy like a Chouffe. Because the bitterness restricts the sweetness, you can taste bread as well. Malty goodness. Very refreshing with modest alcohol. This is such a nice beer, complex and characterful.

Although the Dubbel is my least favourite of the three classic trappist styles, the Westmalle Dubbel is certainly my favourite of the style. I tend to my Dubbel’s a little too thin on the palate for my liking, but this one feels nice, full bodied. Lots of the flavours you come to expect from the Belgian trappists--caramel, plums, a bit of chocolate, candi sugar--but there is also a hint of the sour/smokiness that also pervades their tripel. Nice beer.

Light cola brown color. Light brown sugar and mild caramel on the nose. Mouthfeel is very smooth and lightly creamy. Very mellow flavors of sweet ripe fruit and brown sugar.
