3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 ClarkVV (3578) - Allston, Massachusetts, USA - JAN 20, 2004
2003? bottle. Burgundy red with deeper chestnut browns, fizzy (as expected) but a big off-white head with some brown flecks in it. bottle conditioned. Aroma of bittersweet prunes, light phenols, dry gingerbread?, and a touch of sweet molasses. Hmm, this is very light, much more so than expected or hoped for. Good cinnamon, brown sugar, earthiness, rhubarb, dry raspberry and a touch of lightly sweet chocolate. Very watery consistency, finish has some alcohol on it and a touch of astringency. Not terribly impressed, will try again at some point.

A: The pour is a dark amber color with a big tan colored head.
S: The nose is good, but not amazing. Some dark fruits in the form of raisins, plums, and figs with plenty of sweet malt notes: molasses, caramel, and toffee.
T: A lot more intensity to the flavor. A great malt character that’s bready with excellent but balanced sweetness that provides some molasses, toffee, caramel. The fruits are over-ripe and sweet, mostly cherries, plums, and figs.
M: Medium in body with very ample carbonation, as you would expect for a Belgian ale.
D: Really a delicious and easy to drink beer. One of the better dubbels I’ve had in awhile.

I don’t have specific tasting notes, but I love abbey dubbels, and Westmalle’s is one of the finest, as are their other beers.

Pours a dark brown with a few reddish highlights. Off white head and good lacing. Smell is dark plums and raisins with a good amount of caramel and dark sugars. Taste is a bit less unrefined, with the yeast characteristics not coming through nearly as much. More of a bready-type flavor. Mouthfeel is fairly full and rich. Drinkability is okay; not nearly as impressive as their tripel.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 OleR (3510) - Oslo, NORWAY - JAN 24, 2007
Dense, mostly lasting khaki head over an unclear chestnut-brown body. Nice lacework. Sweet malty aroma with a little fruit to it. Candysugar and sweet dark malt flavors. Lots of dark fruits too; raisins, prunes and plums. Modest hopbitterness. A bit cloying mouthfeel. Inviting and well made, but a bit too sweet for my tastebuds.
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Sigmund (3495) - Hafrsfjord, NORWAY - MAR 24, 2003
(33 cl bottle). Enormous lasting head, cloudy brown colour. Lovely aroma of oak, leather and spices. Well balanced spicy flavour, slightly bitter finish. Aftertaste could have lasted a bit longer, but this is still a thoroughly well made beer.

I finally rate this awesome brew. Pours a dark ruby color with a large foamy white head. A nice yeast-filled, fruity and malty nose. The flavor is excellent; smooth, loads of dark fruits, yeast, some dry notes, but very flavorful. A toasted malt profile also. Very easy to drink and tasty. I enjoyed this one a ton.
