Clear deep red brown with a big beige head. Aroma is sweet, malty, dried fruit and yeasty. Flavor is rather sweet and moderate bitter. Dry and bitter finish. Clearly not one of my favorites among the trappists. 210211

UPDATED: APR 25, 2010 Best by 05/16/2008. Sampled in my Westmalle challis. The beer pours to an unfiltered deep brown body with a thin khaki head. The aroma is quite fruity with notes of raspberries amongst the strong port wine and fresh unfiltered grape juice. How the heck does it smell this much like grapes? The flavor is a grapey sweet yeasty tobacco-like malt. The palate is creamy and juicy. Nice medium body.
3.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Marko (2977) - Split, CROATIA - MAR 7, 2006
0.33l bottle, Westmalle Trappist glass, at Tolkien’s House, Zagreb The bartender claimed that this was the best beer he ever had, and the scores here would pretty much confirm it, best Trappist Dubbel. And I agree (not the best beer ever part, the best Abbey Dubbel one), but I’ll come to that later. It poured a very nice very-dark-nearly-black colour. Small thick tan head that went away at a medium pace. The nose... is a damn void, and a huge disappointment. It wasn’t even too cold. And it didn’t show up as it warmed. Surprising, seeing the big marks in that department in the other reviews. Ah, well. Only some faint acidity/deep malt here. The taste is very pleasant. Not really typical, though (not that sweet). A bit mild, but lovely maltiness, countered by the pleasant Belgian-style acidity, some yeast, weak fruitiness. Weak but pleasant chewy hopiness that goes into the aftertaste. A great quaffer, no doubt about it. I’ll try another, just to see if I was wrong about the aroma.

Bottle says best before 10/07/06. Poured into a trappist glass. Nice solid head quickly disspates with no lacing. Thick toasty caramel. Shows a beautiful red when held to the light. Lightly sweet with a slight sour taste. Quite fizzy with an abrupt finish.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 ryan (2959) - Beltsville, Maryland, USA - FEB 8, 2007
Dark brown body with a large tan head, lasting, nice lacing. The aroma is banana, figs, pear and perfumey hops. The flavor is pear, some banana and peach, figs, golden raisins, candi sugar and herbal hops. Medium body, moderately dry, very soft texture. Excellent and very deserving of it’s stellar reputation.

Pours a nice deep brown with an amber hue. Huge tan head. Rich thick, quality malt bouquet and a touch of chocolate. Thick and creamy with huge chewy maltyness, which has a touch of roastyness. Chocolatey, wood-chip, raisiny, toasted earthy grainy aspect, nutty, has a banana hint in the background, warming touch and a late almondy subtle dryness.

330ml bottle from BevMo Carmel Mountain. This Trappist brew poured a very hazy coffee brown with a slight reddish tint. Head was light tan, thin, and creamy.....some lacing. Aroma was of toffee, raisins, and other dark fruits. As the beer sat, cherry aroma’s became more predominant. Medium in body and some what sweet. Another great brew from the Monks!
