4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Borresteijn (2596) - Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - JUL 17, 2008
On tap @ Café de Paas, Den Haag/The Hague. This is one of my long time favourites. Dark reddish brown colour, creamy beige head. Aroma of yeast, a bit musty, chocolate. Taste is dark grain, some chocolate, raisins, a little sour. What makes this really good is the lack of sweetness and the rather thick mouthfeel. Tastes even less sweet from the bottle, however, I prefer it from tap. Imho the best dubbel there is.

Bottle, aroma of yeast and sweet fruit. Murky brown body with tan head. Decent mix pf fruity flavors along with some sour bitterness mixed in. Smooth on the palate with a sticky fruit aftertaste lingering on finish.

03.18.05 330ml bottle dated 25.11.05 Woody brown pour with unflappable khaki head. Fun Belgian aromas, Fleer gum, plum, berries, rum-soaked raisins. Body is lighter than I expected, full but airy and plenty effervescent. Sour in a beautifully earthy way, much like a white Burgundy, also a bit mineral, reminiscent of pretzel salt on my lips. Finishes thoughtfully, bright, but maybe thinner than I’d hoped. Refreshing where I anticipated coating, crisp where I expected sweet, pleasantly dry to close. It’s about time I had this.

Bottle from Stirchley Wines and Spirits, Birmingham. Very dark brown, with a beige head. Oat and berry aroma, thick and ominous. Sweet, fruity taste, firm, full-bodied. Alcohol creeps in on the finish, before relaxing back to a sweet, malty flavour. Thick in the mouth, complex and balanced. Bubbly on the tongue. Superb beer, which has everything.

UPDATED: JUN 10, 2007 Bottle has no notching on date codes, but best by? date stamp is 04-05-07; maybe 5 years old? Pours cloudy, dark brown. Huge head quickly boils away to nothing. Aroma is toffee and chocolate-covered cherries with slight alcohol. Flavor is yummy caramel chocolate with slight hop bittering at the end to provide great balance. Palate is dry and medium bodied. Great beer.

330mL Bottle. Rated blind. Fifth out of a set of 12 Abbey Dubbels. Aroma is a sharp, hoppy,
carameled malt sugar. Nice and complex. Solid and unique. Pours a deep
coppery-brown, quite-hazy, with a lacy, rocky head in flesh. Flavor is
bright and complex, with brown sugar, fruitcake, brandy, nicely
caramelized malts (heavy on the CaraMunich) and then a bristling,
surprisingly noticeable fresh Noble hop character. This is good. Of the
five I’ve had so far, this is the most stylistically unique, but the
most delicious and most quality brew. Nice balance of sugars, alcohol,
and malt complexity. I think I revel in this one the most, because the
browned sugar complex is very deep and satisfying.
GUESS: Rochefort or Urthel
