4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Ober (2125) - Bommelerwaard, NETHERLANDS - MAR 12, 2008
I think one of the well-known trappist beers in the Netherlands. It’s maybe the standard for the most people, if they think how a trappist has to be. Particular for those who aren’t familiar with beers.
It’s red/brown colored beer, with a large creamy dark beige foamy head. An aroma which begins a little sweet, fruits, then caramel and a litlle spicy. The taste is complex, a little roasted malts, also some dark fruit, with caramel and at the end some bitternes. In my opion a very good beer.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 bager (2121) - Copenhagen N, DENMARK - DEC 15, 2005
Classic belgian dubble. Dark brown - malty and caramel but also a little fruity and sweet. All in all very good.
4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 mkobes (2121) - paramus, New Jersey, USA - JAN 25, 2004
1996 vintage bottle. Tasted this beer with Maibockaddict. Reddish orange in color, with lots of floaties. Sharp, fruity aroma. Full bodied beer. Well aged bottle, and it was wonderful.
Maibockaddict and I also had a newer version of this beer, a 2003 version. More fresh aroma. Raisiny flavor, not as aged as the first one 8 years. It ages very well and its worth the money.
4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 scraff (2118) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - MAR 7, 2006
Deep crimsony brown, thick lasting off white head. A rich and complex nose of plum, raisin, fig, brown sugar and faint notes of caramel. Flavor mirrors the aroma with soft malty rich dark fruit tones up front, and a nice light hop backing providing excellent balance. Medium bodied, pillow soft carbonation, dark fruity finish. Why I passed over this a million times is beyond me. Awesome abbey ale. Thanks again for the bottle hopscotch.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 mds (2115) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 26, 2006
Draught. I don’t know why it took me so long to try this, but anyway. Rich caramel-brown with a frothy tannish head and lace. Aroma has lots of dark chocolate malts - sugar candy and bread. Flavour is rich in malts - predominately caramel smoothness. It’s pretty underwhelming I think, especially when compared overall to the Tripel.
3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 BeerLimey (2112) - California, USA - MAR 17, 2005
Clear brown appearance, thick head formation. Sweet bubble gum clove combined with dark raisin/prune fruit aroma and some faint dusty spiciness. Sweet syrupy fruit malt palate that doesn’t get thick but is very well subdued by a dry woody balance. Fair hoppiness in the finish lingering soft and dry.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 jimhilt (2112) - Bow, New Hampshire, USA - APR 19, 2004
Pours a huge light brown, five finger-head leaving just traces of lace, pour slowly. Deep ruby color. Good carbonation. Medium bodied. Starts malty and sweet, finishes with a good mix of hops and malt but a slightly hoppy aftertaste. My 100th Belgian and not a bad one in the bunch. $5.39 for a 330ml bottle.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Dorwart (2110) - Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA - MAR 14, 2004
Gigantic tan head of small bubbles. Reduces to a nice cratered foam. Good carbonation. Slightly smokey, fruity aroma with cherries and raisins. Beautiful dark brown/mahagony. Excellent beer to look at. Slightly sweet flavor with plenty of malt, roasted grains and a note of alcohol. Nice warming as it goes down way to easy. Dry and clean finish. A top quality dubbel!
