Caramel and yeasty aroma with notes of honey. Clear mahogany colour. Bitter front caught me off guard; notes of banana, toffee, and black coffee. Medium in body and carbonation. Nice, but a bit too bitter for my desire of a Dubbel.

One of the very few trappist beers I don’t like. Too dark, too bitter. Not recommended.

11-28-2014 - A very nice beer but I like his brothers Tripel and Extra better.

Poured with a large tan head with tiny bubbles, beautiful mahogany colour when held to the light. Boozy yeasty bubblegum on the nose. Thin body with a massive boozy hit, bitterness comes through leaving a tacky mouthfeel and a desire for another sip. Sweet banana at the back of the pallet. Perfect for the style.

Dark reddish brown colour. Aroma od plums, bananas and some tropical fruits. Similar is flavour with nice balanced malty notes and slightly bitterness. Very drinkable beer.

330ml bottle. Clear dark amber body, small beige head, average to poor retention. Aroma of yeast and alcohol, dark berries, brown sugar, cloves, overripe banana. Taste of roasted malts, herbs and yeast, alcohol. Metallic aftertaste. Good.

Thanks to Maxbier. Pours Brown with off white head. Toasted malt aroma with some yeast. Sweet caramel malt start with some fruity notes and yeastiness. Very smooth brew.

Veel verkocht bier, geen uitschieter in zijn soort. Maar zeker niet slecht te drinken.

Pours opaque ruby brown with a short light tan head diminishing rapidly to a thin skim, no lacing. (4/5) Nose is complex: toffee and caramel, brown sugar, dark slightly boozy stone fruit, mild cloves, banana and bubblegum. (9/10) Taste is moderate sweet, mild bitter, very slight tart. (9/10) Full slightly creamy body, soft carbonation, lingering dry finish. (5/5) Really good. The sweetness is never cloying, and as it fades, there’s a very mild lingering bitter that you keep expecting to come forwards - but it doesn’t. The bitter stays in the background and never upsets the smooth fruity flavour or the lingering dry finish. There’s a very slight restrained acidity that keeps the mouth feel clean and almost crisp, and brings out the stone fruit flavour. I love hoppy and bitter beers, and this is pretty much the complete antithesis of that: it’s all about the dark malt fruitiness - and I like it a lot. There’s a reason this is considered a reference dubbel. (18/20)
