(33 cl bottle). Enormous lasting head, cloudy brown colour. Lovely aroma of oak, leather and spices. Well balanced spicy flavour, slightly bitter finish. Aftertaste could have lasted a bit longer, but this is still a thoroughly well made beer.

VERY good trappist ale. Lovely fresh aroma with a touch of bananas. A wonderful fruity (again bananas) flavour with a LONG, strong finish. A bit more dry than the other trappists I have had.

Re-rate: Still as good looking as ever. This time I picked put a spicey apple fruity calvados and port wine aroma and flavour I was not able to quite pin down before. Perhaps this one was a little on the lighter side compared to the others as far as flavours go but still an damn fine beer. I also got this celery and chicken noodle soup tang thing that crops up occasionally in nearly all the trappistes - I’d really like to know what that is? Everything else in previous rating stands.
Second rating 7/7/2002 4.4 Dense brown-red murky colour with large fluffy mid-tan head, nice lacing as well. Gorgeous complex floral aromatic and spicey nose and flavours. Superb body and nicely balanced palate and finish. One of my favourite beers made even better by drinking it with a meal at an small Belgian streetcafe on a mild summers evening.

Nothing needs to be said about this beer. It’s reputation preceeds it.

Best when fresh on draft

Very nice classic trappist. In Belgium definitely now being underrated. In most Belgian pubs they serve this beer too cold, let’s say pils temperatures. Then you get some iron taste in the glas. If served in ambient temps you get the full palate of nice malts and some very nice fruit. This beer must also be served very carefully - do not pour the yeast in the glass (my choice), therefore I think it is a delicate beer - handle with care. On draught this beer is slightly thinner but probably the draught Westmalle is much younger, but still very nice. Cheers

1996 vintage bottle. Tasted this beer with Maibockaddict. Reddish orange in color, with lots of floaties. Sharp, fruity aroma. Full bodied beer. Well aged bottle, and it was wonderful.
Maibockaddict and I also had a newer version of this beer, a 2003 version. More fresh aroma. Raisiny flavor, not as aged as the first one 8 years. It ages very well and its worth the money.
