I’m so busy fixing up my house this weekend that I fear I’ll not be able to drink any more beer till Monday. With this fear in the front of my mind I go to the cellar and pick the first thing I can justify opening that looks tasty at this moment. Westmalle Dubbel you win, let’s have at it. This of course pours wonderfully (into the proper Westmalle chalice I might add) with a big fluffy tan head and tons of solid lace. The color is a deep brown. Aroma is nutty, fruity and yeasty. Plenty of hints of cherry and some apple dominate the nose. I’ve been going through a phase where I’ve been bored with Dubbels as a style, one taste of this has ended that. Bravo Westmalle. Flavor is nice with a wonderful nuttiness and some great fruity notes. There is some molasses like sweetness but this bottle is not nearly as boozy as I remember it being. I think a couple of years on this one is a nice way to go. The mouth feel is very silky and just a pleasure to drink.

Bottle--aroma is heavily sweet, very strong raisin, maybe some plum. Appearance is a rich purple-brown, light brown head. Flavor is quite sweet and very fruity. Raisin is foremost, along with apple and plum. It’s rich and malty as well. Overall, complex but still very drinkable. Very enjoyable.

A: Dark brown with cherry hues and over a finger of billowed mocha foam. This falls slowly to a quilt of the same. Limited lace. Excellent clarity where allowed. (4.5)
S: nougat, bread (rye), cereal, cocoa, nuts (cashews). A hint of spice I’m having a hard time placing (nutmeg?). Slightest finish of praline. (4.5)
T: Cocoa, prune, sugar, bread, raisin, pralines again. Nice flavor, let this one warm up a bit folks. (4.5)
M: Medium on light for the body with carb a little on the hi side. Semi dry finish. All partshere are a bit off for me. (2)
O: Good example of the style. The mouthfeel on this is off for me, and some of the flavors are a bit tough to pick out (part of the fun!). It’s a good example of the style IMO. (4)

Enjoyed on 3/2/11 in a Chalice glass. Burnt sienna color, cloudy body. Headed beige close foam, small bubbles, carried on ´til the end. Wide lacing. High sensation of malty aroma, yeast & low hoppiness. Medium body, low carbonation very well balanced. Very soft & dry bitterness in mouth. Perception of high level of alcohol under your tongue, crisp. Subtle chocolate on the aftertaste. Surprising beer even not being my favourite one of the style. Suggested for a long & paused drink.

11.2 fl oz bottle poured into a sniffer...Smells of malt and raisin ..Very Fluffy and bellowing tan head, Dark red and getting darker as you look towards the middle of the glass..The taste is hard to describe, But its very well balanced, with dark fruit flavors and never overwhelming..I could throw back a few of these no problem.
