Pours a dark brown red color with a nice beige head. Aroma of fruits, apples and grapes, roasted malts, hops, brown sugars and spices.
Flavors of roasted malts, brown sugars, hops, hints of caramels, light apples and raisins, liquorice, and spices. Good carbonation, sweet and bitter, creamy. Easy to drink and quite refreshing.
4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 Papillon (280) - Sudbury, Ontario, CANADA - OCT 14, 2009
330 mL Bottle. Brown / burgundy body with a big fluffy tan head that settles after a few minutes and laces the sides of the glass generously. The aroma is very complex; ripe dark fruits including prunes, figs, and raisins, vanilla, innuendos of toffee and cherry, sweet malt and grains, and a floral spiciness to it. Bold, complex, almost wine-like flavor includes black coffee, figs, prunes, and a very faint hint of cherry. A bitter-sweet spiciness comes through in the aftertaste followed by a nice dry bitter finish that lingers. Hey Belgium, you’ve got another ace.

Very good beer, very good Dubbel. As compared with Chimay, Westmalle is less fruity, but more hop bitter and this is what I like. Depends on your taste, but everyone will like it.

Incredibly smooth and drinkable, despite higher alcohol content. I just wish I had the proper glass.

A mesmerizing beer to the eyes. Deep red/brown color with a fluffy, creamy, slightly tan tinged/off white head. Lots of toast and raisons in the nose; complex spiciness. Medium creamy texture with a dry, balanced finish. Little to no hop character yet beautifully balanced and quite dry. Overall an outstanding beer--when I think of what a dubbel should be this is the beer that comes to mind.
