RedSox2004 (353), Pacific Palisades, California, USA Jan 12, 2008 Updated: Feb 24, 2008Poured with a very thick head that disappeared almost immediately and left little lacing. Given other comments on this beer, I suspect my glass is to blame. Color was orange-lemon, and champagne-like carbonation continually rose to the top.
Very citrusy smell - mostly orange and lemon, which also came through in the taste. A very balanced beer, the high alcohol content is not apparent - be careful.
Pleasant carbonation on the tongue, and a very soft feel.
There are better Trappists, but beyond this category, not many more pleasant drinking experiences. gam (1068), brisbane, Australia Jan 12, 2008 Hazy yellow colour, good frothy head, nice carb,a lemon yellow colour oops!heads gone leaves good lace cover.Aroma lemon overpowering citrus hops far too much sour finish. This beer is too much like champagne for my liking. beerbiere (101), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Jan 12, 2008 33 cl 2 year-old sample. Golden-orange topped by a creamy head - the Westmalle glass makes the beer shine like a jewel in its case. Aroma of orange, spice, butter and a fresh note (Saaz??), a little madeira and graham cookie. More on the sweet side, finishes on citrus peels bitterness. Soft and silky texture, pretty round. The finish could be more precise, maybe this is due to aging. A classic! phantomtwister (18), Belgium Jan 11, 2008 The best beer in the world for me (i’m belgian and i live about 30km from the west vleteren abbey). You need to taste the 75cl bottle, he’s some much better than the 33cl. Or you need to let the 33 rest for a few months.
The taste is sweet, but also bitter at the end. You taste the hop, and for me that’s what beer should be! n1 daniellerose7 (119), new york, New York, USA Jan 11, 2008 I likey! Thick bodied, golden deliciousness. Lots-o-head and alcohol! Watch out! You’ll want more than one! Bring your designated driver!! tarjei (1741), Bryne, Norway Jan 11, 2008 33 cl bottle. Clear golden color. Big white head. Spicy and yeasty aroma. Flavor is yeast.alcohol, spices, caramel malt, hops, fruit and honey. Dry and bitter finish. Strong and balanced. darkseduction (198), Zweibrücken, Germany Jan 10, 2008 very nice in the beginning but the aftertaste is quite heavy, the alcohol knocks you off! Dubbel is much better. weaselkenievil (738), Cheshire, England Jan 8, 2008 Golden yellow with a nice white head. First had this in large quantities in Belgium and what a drink to have a lot of! Gets you away with a mixer! Very drinkable, I like this style and I like this beer.
