Did I just give this a 4.5? That puts it in my top 1%. I wasn’t expecting that, but I sure don’t see where I’ve overinflating the scores. This is a stunningly good beer in every respect, and it’s the best tripel (a personal favorite style) that I’ve ever had.
This beer pours a beautiful gold with a rich white head. The nose is a delight, strong spicy yeast aromas with honey and citrus, some passionfruit, and the faintest whisiper of alcohol.
This is the sort of aroma that makes it very hard to do anything other than dive right into a huge first sip. Much to my surprise and delight, that first sip was every bit as good as the aroma hinted it might be. A lively, spicy, and relatively dry tripel livened up with a light tropical fruitiness that makes the overall beer easy to drink, almost as if it were gently sweet but without the cloyingness that can come with a strong sweet Belgian beer. The hops kick in resolutely in the finish, leaing a lovely balanced bitterness on the long end of the flavor profile, accented by the lingering spiciness of the yeasts.
The mouthfeel is exceptional: impressively creamy, rich without being heavy in any way, a 9.5% that simply hnts at its presence, adding a fullness and graitas without any heat.
Absolutely marvellous.
lithy (149), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Sep 5, 2008 Cloudy golden orange color with a finger of very creamy white head. Spicy aroma, perfumes and dark floral notes. Sharp spice bite and very carbonated yet creamy mouthfeel. Nice sweet dry finish. nbutler11 (161), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Sep 5, 2008 Pours a light straw color from the bomber with a trim white head. Plenty of green grapes, mild yeast, and anise on the nose which carry into the flavor. More watery than I prefer, but a fine Tripel. PaulHegedus (66), Brampton, Ontario, Canada Sep 4, 2008 Bottle. This pours a light golden colour with a large, energetic head. Aromas of apple, grape, yeast, a bit of orange. Tastes strongly of alcohol, with fruit, apple, citrus. hellbilly (865), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Sep 3, 2008 bb 1/22/10... pours somewhat viscous a cloudy golden color with lots of floaters evident. super long lasting airy/wispy/soapy off white head. pillowy foam coats the inside of the glass as the head eventually recedes. really yeasty aroma with notes of black pepper spiciness, canned pear/fruity?, soap/flowers and a hint of some skunk. lots of yeast in the flavor as well as pears, dried grass and herbs, mild caramel and a skunky hop finish. spiciness comes on strong toward the end as the abv% warms up the belly. medium body. nice and dry on the palate. soft airy carbonation makes it velvety and smooth... temporrari (312), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Sep 2, 2008 Thick white head that lasts, hazy yellow color, lots of yeast sediment in the bottle, luckily I poured it really well and left almost all of it behind. The head actually gets bigger after I pour the beer and let it sit in the glass. There is quite a bit of visible carbonation. An easy 5. Smells pretty darn good. Spicy, yeast, slightly grassy and funky, definitely some fruity stuff in there too. I’m gonna say 8. Flavor is excellent. Perhaps not a complex as the aroma. Very lively on the palate. Smooth drinking. Real good stuff.
