Assignment by John Vanloo of San Francisco-based Waterloo Beverages LLC to develop & manufacture the Westoek Ale – 6% ABV at & by the Deca Brewery. As this was a very complex recipe to deal with, Deca asked Urbain Coutteau, brew master at Struise to collaborate on this project. 4 grain Blond dry triple ale married to a soft English bitter. Urbain’s Magnum hops for bittering, Styrian Goldings for different aroma hop gifts in the boil, late boil & flame out, Hallertauer Mittelfrueh for dry hopping.

Golden clear color with white head. Light malt aroma, at taste is light sweet and dry, so easy to drink.

Bottle from Sun Devil Liquors. Pours golden with a thin white khaki head. Massive bubble gum on the nose. Bready and yeasty with a touch of sweetness on the tongue. Finishes clean. Nice!

Leicht hopfiger Antrunk, belgische Kräuternoten in geringem Umfang. Spritzig, etwas grasig, die Kräuternoten breiten sich aus, dabei ist das Bier aber kaum malzig sondern hopfig. Süffig, trocken. 11/11/11/11/8/11

33cl bottle thanks to allmyvinyl. Appearance - golden orange and typically generous Belgian head. Nose - flowers and crystallised orange and lemon. Taste - more dried citrus with a yeasty lemon sorbet on the finish. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a very dry and refreshing finish. Overall - not exceptional by Belgian standards but a good beer.

330ml bottle from De Struise webshop. Pours hazy yellow, thin white head, big bubbles. Light floral and spice aromas, light nutty caramel. Sweet and spicy taste. Odd stringent note at the end. Good overall.

Reminds me of a black IPA, with the body of a typical Struise beer. (yeasty, sweet and with spices.) Good and original beer.

UPDATED: MAY 3, 2014 Blonde dorée trouble, effervescence moyenne-faible, col fin. Bien maltée en entrée, amertume fruitée et herbacée bien présente par la suite, un peu aqueuse.

330 ml bottle. BB 1/2014. From bierkompass.de.
Dark golden colour with a small creamy off-white head. Gloomy maltiness, alcohol and quite a lot caramel sweetness in the aroma. Not very promising. Unbalanced mixture of strong sweet maltiness, hoppy bitterness and alcohol. No good at all. Let’s see if the XX is any better.

Very pale, golden and brilliant, transparent aspect, with a small and white head. Looks like a champagne, aided by a relatively present carbonation. Its watery texture and low body plays against it, but its interesting mouthfeel is a goal. Moderately complex (or peculiar), it’s fruity, malty and surprisingly well balanced. It fits the concept between Belgian tripel and English bitter. Interesting, but anyway far from the colossal Struise beers.
