Assignment by John Vanloo of San Francisco-based Waterloo Beverages LLC to develop & manufacture the Westoek Ale – 6% ABV at & by the Deca Brewery. As this was a very complex recipe to deal with, Deca asked Urbain Coutteau, brew master at Struise to collaborate on this project. 4 grain Blond dry triple ale married to a soft English bitter. Urbain’s Magnum hops for bittering, Styrian Goldings for different aroma hop gifts in the boil, late boil & flame out, Hallertauer Mittelfrueh for dry hopping.

On tap at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2012. An almost clear one, golden-orange in color and with a dense, light beige head of moderate size. A quite subtle aroma and flavor in this one, but quite pleasant. The aroma is syrupy and fruity, lightly peachy. There’s some bitterness in the flavor, but mostly it’s fruity and sugary, leading to a bitter finish. Medium to full body, with appropriate levels of carbonation. Overall, lacking on most things this one, but it slides down the throat quite easily. 120511

33cl bottle massive thanks to MesandSim. Any beer brewed at Deca and with Urbain’s help is obviously going to excite me and this did. Blondish ale with good clarity and lasting near white head. Some estery yeast on the aroma as well as fresh fruit salad. Touch of cinnamon in there somewhere? It reminded me of Mr Kipling Country Slices. Drinkable as hell. Not the most complex Belgian Ale, but hell, give me a six pack and they would disappear pretty quickly. Quaffing ale.
