Ungstrup (11154), Frederiksberg, Denmark Jan 14, 2004 A hazy brown beer with a beutiful collapsing head. The aroma is sweet, moldy aroma with notes of coffee, chocolate, and acidic. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of licorice, wood, raisins, and chocolate. The alcohol runs over the tongue. A little like portwine. omhper (10456), Stockholm, Sweden Jun 4, 2002 Sampling of the 1996 version in 2002: Dark amber. Nice complex aroma full of fruit, honey and toffee. Nicely malty, mature, toffee flavour. Sweetish finish with a hint of bitterness. Incredibly flavourful for being so light. Papsoe (9999), Frederiksberg, Denmark Jun 27, 2005 (Bottle 33 cl) Very dark - almost stout-like - with a big and rather stable head. Notes of figs - burned figs - a bit tar’ish. Must contain considerable amounts of burned malts. Surprisingly only medium-bodied for a trappist. Very easy to drink, and not really hardcore in any way. Pity this has been taken out of production. 070398 Oakes (6853), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Aug 17, 2004 1997 Vintage.
Cloudy, murky brown with red highlights and some chunks. Flowery, hoppy, toffeeish, slightly phenolic, slightly yeasty aroma. Soft, sweetish body with flowery notes, slighty peach and pear and plenty of dark malt. Soft and balanced. yespr (6400), Copenhagen O, Denmark Apr 15, 2007 Updated: Oct 4, 200733 cL bottle in joint tasting of the family of 4 Westvleteren beers. Pours unclear red brown. Explosive. Aroma is slight fruity and alcoholic but sadly also oxidized. Taste is fruity with a touch of caramel maltyness, but overall dry and light acidic. Finish was dry fruity.6-3-6-3-13=3.1
Re-rate of a 2001 BBD bottle. Complex fruity aroma. Nutty and dried fruity flavour, quite malty. Spiced too. Definately more fresh and complex than the 1998 bottle I had.7-3-7-4-15=3.6
