swoopjones (1862), Buffalo, New York, USA Jun 25, 2008 Rating #1000 . Pours a nice caramel cola pour but this cant hold a torch to the ass to the 12. Th e flavor is weakened & watered. This is still a very good beer but not as good as ratings tend to assume. try this blinded & im sure your rating will be lower. Flavor is there but muted. Just tried Westy 8, Westy 12 & St. Bern Apt 12 next to each other. Westy 12 is far superor. On its own platform. Westy 8 is nice but the 12 is on a whole different level ironchefscott (341), portland, Oregon, USA Jun 24, 2008 finally got to try this fabled beer....good example of a double? Nice malty nose with a touch of the yeast that defines this beer....nice estery quality.....damn good.....verrry drinkable bhensonb (4189), Woodland, California, USA Jun 23, 2008 Purchased in Brussels 2008. Bottle shared with Marcus. Nice malty aroma. Brown color with a tan head. There is a lot in this one for taste. Malt. Not all that sweet. Something herbal. Very pleasant indeed. Finish is smooth and tasty. Quite mysterious. Wish I could say more. highibus (421), Mill Creek, Washington, USA Jun 21, 2008 finally, I get to try this sought after beer. aroma is incredible. deep currents and other dark fruit. sure is nice and fruity but with a nice subtleness. really clean yet a depth of flavor. finish is clean and fruity. it lived up to the mystic. Dubbercody (214), Vancouver, Washington, USA Jun 21, 2008 Had two different samples one labeled as 20 years old and one 1-2 years old.
Both fantastic in their own right. I’m very impressed with how the 20 year bottle held up. Some oxidation, but it added to the flavor profile. Whomever I got if from took care of it...thank you.
Dark reddish brown ale, with a head on the newer one. Nose brought out a lot of fruits and nuttiness. Feels fantastic in your mouth, nice thick coating feel.
Great beers!
minch25 (350), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jun 19, 2008 1 yr old. Dark auburn/burgundy color; medium tan head. Restrained malty aroma. Not overly sweet, like lightly toasted walnuts / burnt fruit; toffeeish/caramel flavors? Some spice. Even some cola / Dr. Pepper notes (but thankfully not too much). Smooth and very soft; 8% alcohol is hardly noticeable. Very well-balanced. Quake1028 (633), Tampa, Florida, USA Jun 18, 2008 Bottle courtesy of Joseph Redner the 3rd. Finally got to try this one. Bruised plum colored body with cherry highlights. Tan head, about 1.5 fingers thick, dense and great spiderweb lacing. Lasts for quite a while, resolves to a thick foamy ring. Nose of bourbon soaked cherries, plums, caramel, fresh baked bread, nutmeg and cola. Flavor is more of the same, sweet dark fruits, spices, cherries, bourbon, man this tastes even better than it smells, and that’s saying a whole lot. Mouthfeel is awesome, thick and viscous, coats the tongue on each sip, like a fine liquor would. Finish is lengthy, cola, bread dough, dark fruits and spices ride out into the night. Not as refined or sophisticated as it’s big brother, but still a damn good beer, and the highlight of a very impressive tasting. I want more. OFlan (14), USA Jun 18, 2008 Appearance:
Dark brown, pours a nice head that lingers. Not so much as the 12, but definitely a solid head.
Aroma:
The aroma is phenomenal. I’m literally getting chills smelling it. It’s like a smooth, vanilla bean maltiness with a hint of dark plum/cherry. It’s gotta note of bubblegum too it as well. Very similar to the 12 if I recall correctly. Might have to do a side by side with the other bottle.
Flavor:
Hold on, I have to prepare myself mentally..... ok, here I go. First thing that comes is the roast. Not overpowering, but strong and exact... no astringincy, no harshness, almost smokey. Fruitiness is less than in the 12. A solid malt presence, but pretty dry. behind the malt and roast is a string of tart, nut, bubblegum, touch of alcohol and light hop flavor.
Mouthfeel:
Wonderful creaminess, fully carbed
Overall:
Excellent beer, one of the best, but not as good as the 12. The aroma was easily the best part, it was delicious, but the flavor seemed a little seperated. I think it needs age, according to the cap it was bottled pretty recently.... in fact, now that I’m looking at it, I think it was bottled 3 weeks ago! Yikes! I just drank it green!
EDIT: OK, as it warms the flavors really start to meld a little better... still not as good as the 12 though  I really feel like an ass for drinking it so young too
