Westvleteren has the smallest output of the Trappist breweries, with only a small part of their production going very far into the world.

Bottle. North Bar, Leeds. Cap has the date 24.04.16 on it. Clear, reddy copper colour. Very bubbly, yet dense, lasting, pale tan head. Nose has granary bread, buttery malts. Fruit cake fruits. Quite vinous. Some chocolate. Some hazelnut. Smells great. Taste is fruity, and vinous dry. Light, stony bitterness. Soft, foamy mouthfeel. Never feels the ABV. Stone fruit bitterness rises at the end. Very easy drinking.

Carbonatazione elegante, nient’ affatto pungente, corpo molto debole, rotonda, calda senza alcun eccesso alcolico. Equilibrata e parecchio armonica.

Brown clear color with a solid foam layer. The smell is "typical brown" with a (honey?) sweetness. The taste is full, sweet and creamy like caramel with a well dosed fine carbonation. Dryish sweet aftertaste.

Bottle. Aroma of dried berries; prunes, raisins, herbal grassy, dark malt, melasses, bitter hops, A bit yeasty. The flavours is very sweet and only light bitter towards the finish. The body is medium and the texture is oily. Soft carbonation. A very balanced and good beer.

330 ml bottle (best before on cap: 19/06/17).

Preparation: Fridged bottle, then cooled at room temperature and popped at 12°C (within recommended temperature range) onto Westmalle chalice.

Looks: Cloudy hazy dark brown with a layer of chunky yeast particels; Half finger head and light beige foam which lasts for one minute; Very good sticky lacing with bubbly slight carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant and sweet full dark malt, with strong plums, dried figs, liquor alcohol, candied sugar, caramel, strong toffee, vanilla, spices, rye bread, strong Bel yeast, thin lemon and light grass. Not that strong to the nose but multi-layered and very pleasant!

Taste: Strong sweet full dark malt, with strong alcohol, liquorices, candied sugar, plums, figs, dark bread, caramel, toffee, toast, strong spices, strong Bel yeast, lemon and moderate bitter herbal hops.

Body: Medium body. Very slick and quite creamy palate.

Mouth Feel: Much like the aroma, it’s a layered and well-combined bliss of good dark maltyness with strong influence of kick-ass Bel yeast. The dark fruits, caramel, toffee and toast are omnipresent with every sips, closely followed by chewy bread and spices. Pretty strong lemon and herbs to round. Excellent!

Booze and Sweetness: the 8% alcohol is very liquor-like, pronounced and sweet, but not too overbearing and compliment the beer pretty well. Nice!

Hoppiness: Thin lemon and light grass in nose, and much strong plus spicesand herbs in taste. Bitterness, compounded with liquorices, is strong for a lasting, sweet herbal malty finish.

After Taste: Slightly Dry. Sweet, boozy and smooth to mouth.

Comments: As a strong Belgian Dark, this one got a very soulful yeast to sparkle from start to finish. Not as Darwinian as Westvleteren XII, but within BSA this is top stuff, with strong and creamy and layered tastes match toe to toe with the aroma, nice booze and expressive herbal hoppiness. Bold and full of subtle characters, I just can’t get enough for Christmas!

Bottle, courtesy of SinH4. Not a double, not a triple, but it would fit well. Very sweet and boozy, all well done. Very very nice, but clearly not Top 30 as its listed here.
