cewldre (268), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Dec 16, 2006 Thanks to IMtheOptimator for this beer. Pours a nice dark brown color, with a nice, slightly tan head. Smell was interesting, with some raisin smells hiding deep down. The taste was similar, smooth, raisin feel, with some roastiness in there as well. This was a very good beer to drink. PilsnerPeter (2598), Flushing, New York, USA Dec 11, 2006 Pours a hazy brownish with thick tan head. Chocolatey aroma, with hints of sweet dried fruits (dates, figs) and a touch of yeast. Velvety mouthfeel. Strong toffeeish malts, subtle fig/brownsugar hints, with a slightly roasted middle. Balanced by a light bitterness in the finish. Smooth and highly drinkable. ryan (1774), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Dec 5, 2006 Updated: Jan 23, 2008TITW-II. Pours clear amber with a small, creamy, off-white head. The aroma is figs, toffee and peaches. The flavor is toffee, plums and slightly spicy. Medium body with a soft and smooth texture. illinismitty (1790), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Nov 28, 2006 Updated: Nov 29, 2006600 thank yous to Springslicker for this gem. Pours murky brown with floaties and an off white head. Wonderful perfumy aroma, notes of yeast, cherries, and apple butter.Nice earthy texture. Flavor of plums, caramel, fruit. Smooth sweet finish with a wisp of alcohol. I like this slightly better than the 12..SORRY ROSS! The 12 has more body, but too much alcohol for my tastes. If this stuff was easier to come by, I bet a half and half would be awesome. altonbrownd (1862), Amsterdam, Netherlands Nov 23, 2006 Bottle from Beer Mania. Wow! Another fantastic spicy ale. Smells deliscious. Taste winds up, fruity, spicey, alcohol mouthfeel and then smoothens out, silk-like. Warms the stomach mintues after and leaves lacey feel on the lips. Just divine. jetzler (622), oklahoma city, Oklahoma, USA Nov 22, 2006 Updated: Feb 21, 2007Bottle thanks to Shrubber85. Aroma is big and fruity ripe banana, dark cherries, nutmeg, plums, figs and raisins, wow a lot of fruit super complex. Dark cloudy appearance, only the slightest hind of red undertones. Rich flavor, reminds me of really rich port, great fruitiness, really good, really rich like drinking a warm fruit salad covered in rich chocolate, not hersheys but the really good swiss stuff. So many flavors so small a tongue. Lighter mouthfeel but not too light, great dryness. Wow really nice. Like bathing your tongue in Don Ho. Truly these monks love God and he loves them, absolutely incredible. Best Belgian brew I have ever had, no doubt. Truly delicious and worth anything you have to do to try it. matta (1137), Tampa, Florida, USA Nov 21, 2006 Rating #999
This beer has been in my refrigerator since the day I bought it, which was about 2 years ago.
The beer pours a dark rusty colored body with a tall tan head. The aroma puts forward delicate hints of chocolate covered apples, malted milk balls, and walnuts. The flavor is more yeasty than I would have estimated… it’s lightly doughy, biscuity, a bit dusty. There is the most minute bitterness in the finish, a hint of lime zest, followed by a cracked black pepper spiciness. The palate is velvety but also dusty along the edges.
I sadly was a bit under-whelmed with this beer. Although it was very enjoyable, I was hoping for a transcendent moment that never managed to materialize. Stew41 (1042), Caulfield, Australia Nov 21, 2006 The only time we came remotely close to tracking down Westy ‘on-premise’ was at the very good Afspanning ’t Waagstuk bar in Antwerpen (e.4.0). Dark reddish brown and thin creamy head with good density. Chunky lacing. Bouquet is quite soft with dark malts but not much else stands out. Palate shows a truckload of balance and intergration to the extent that the beer appears to lose some power. Dark malt flavours pop up again, quite dry, a touch of spice and some aniseed. One would almost assume that beer had quite a bit of bottle age given the impressive level of balance and smoothness.
