4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
#250. 33cl bottle. Served at 50° (10°C) in my NB worthy glass. Pours light brown with a 1" tall off-white head. The beer thoroughly coats the glass when swirled and there are plenty of foam dots strewn about the glass. A fair amount of sediment left at the end of the glass. Aroma is caramel apple, citrus, wildflowers, yeast, bakers chocolate, and sweet malt. The mouthfeel is huge. The initial flavor is sweet malt and yeasty, with some mild fruit flavors. The mid-taste on the beer is amazingly complex, vanilla, rum, and very fruity, maybe plums and raisins with a spicy finish that also has some mole? notes. The finish is alcohol and some sweetness. The two elements help cancel each other out. This is tasty beer. When it warms up more, you get a more raisin flavor in the beer.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from De Bier Tempel, Brussels, close to 2 years ago now. Very dark muddy brown with a huge head. Smells delicious - rich vanilla, caramel and banana. That made me think the taste would be all sweetness - but there’s some bitterness there. Restrained flavour - a little disappointingly so - but a nice lively feel. The second best Westy behind the 12.

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
I like The 8 way better then the 12, The taste, the smell, yes, all great, but like soms say, it’s a bit overhyped, it really is a matter of personal taste!

@ Havregatan. Flaska från Mikkeller Bottle Shop, Köpenhamn (100 DKK). Fruktig med ganska hög sötma, karamell, knäck/toffee?, vaniljtoner, alkohol, maltig, jästtoner, perfekt beska, fyllig och len. Avslutningen är fruktig, torr och hyfsat lång

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured a clear dark amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is yeast and red berry fruit. The flavour is moderate sweet moderate bitter with a smooth fruit yeast light hop bitter palate and a short bitter finish. Medium bodied with average carbonation. It’s nice enough, but not that much better that Westmalle Dubbel and to be honest, there would probably be times when I preferred the Westmalle. I don’t get the Westy hype i’m afraid. This isn’t anything to write home about.

Drank from tap with Thijs and John at the pub near the abbey 22-2-2014. Less ’deep’ than the 12. Salmanak taste is a bit more pronounced. Less sweet and fewer carbonation.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bought at de Bierkoning in Amsterdam. The beer does live up to it’s reputation. Nice balanced flavours and aftertaste. Now on to the XII.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
330ml bottle 2013 years vintage, poured into a Westvleteren Trappist glass. Appearance is cloudy dark mahogany with a small thick tan head with good retention, that left a little lacing when reduced. Aroma of black currants, dates, figs and spices. Flavours of black currant, figs, plums, caramel, muscovado and spices. Taste is light sweet and medium bitter. Palate is medium bodied, soft texture and average carbonation. An excellent Belgian strong ale, quite similar flavour profile as Westvleretens XII, but the Extra 8 is mellower and less complicated.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours murky cola brown with nice large tan frothy head. Smell is amazing - sweet caramel, marzipan, dark fruits, cream, bread & alcohol. The taste is quite complex - sweet first up with toffee, dates, alcohol, then a strong malty/bready backbone, drying out in the finish with pistachio notes. The mouthfeel is thinner than expected but surprisingly still very nice & creamy. A very good beer worthy of most of the hype, possibly unfairly compared to its sublime big brother. The aroma was the biggest highlight of this excellent ale for me.
