UPDATED: JUL 6, 2015

March 2013 - Room temp bottle BBE 08/15. Small head that endures. Makes a crackling sound like Rice Crispies. Dark brown with a little redness when held to light. Mild carbonation. Smells yeasty. Mid to full body, and foamy in mouth. Taste is very mild, malty and slightly sweet, raisin, cardboard. (3.7)

June 2015 - 2010 vintage, bottle share thanks to Paul. Taste has a little mint and spice, apple, paper, dust, talc. (3.7)

June 2015 -2010 vintage, bottle share thanks to Fergus. Taste is malty, dusty. Mellow, semisweet and drinkable. The extra sweetness just lifted this one a bit. (3.8)

330ml bottle at home. Pours dark red with a lacy head. Very well-balanced with a fruity aftertaste.

Bottle, BB 21.05.18 (from beergium.com). Pours dark brown without head. Aroma is very sweet, perfumy, dark fruits, raisins, malt. Flavor is sweet and bitter, dark fruits, malt, caramel, toffee. Finish is sweet and bitter with ting of warming alcohol. Carbonation is low, almost flat. Overall: very good, but not great. The bottle opened almost whitout noise and there is very little carbonation. It doesn’t feel oxidized, so maybe just not the best batch/bottle.

330ml bottle, from In Da Vrede, drunk at home. Pours deep claret red with a bubbly off white head. Aroma is cherry, raisin, almond, plum, hazelnut, silky chocolate, light caramel, lots of fruitiness in the palate, medium bodied, creamy texture. Finish is quite sweet with a dry lightly bitter finish. Carbonation is soft.

Pours dark with a hint of red. Huge off white head. Aroma of raisins bread and caramel. Sweet and malty taste with a long but subtle bitter aftertaste. Alcohol warming is quite prominent. This beer needed a few minutes to settle in the glass. The difference was night and day.

At In de Vrede along with the 12. Looks like the 12. Aroma is also very similar but milder. The mouthfeel is thinner, more oily than creamy. Nearly as good as the 12 and considering it is just 8% abv it is as good an option.

Bottle, 33cL. @In de Vresde. A dark brown beer with light hues ; medium creamy beige head ; medium retention. Roasty and toasty aroma, nuts, raisin, pear, light prune. Medium sweet, medium bitter ; dry ; light refreshing ; just a few rays of light get into this undergrowth. Remember me a small walk during a rainy day next to the abbey. Medium good body ; creamy texture ; smooth ; average good carbonation ; sweet roast lasting finish. Overall, a very brown dark toasty ale ; good wingspan ; maybe too dry.

Dark copper-brown in colour with a light tan head. Aroma of dark dried fruits, like prunes and figs, chocolate and raisin. Lightly carbonated with a slick texture and a full body. Sweet at first with some fruity bitterness developing. Long lasting finish. Complex!

(330ml bottle from Bier Tempel, Brussels, July 28 2015) Pours a lightly hazed deep brown with a small but dense and active tan head and lace. Aroma has a dry and dusty character of yeast and spice cupboard. Caramel malts are light to moderate, dried pale fruits, cooked grains, very light roast, nuts. Palate is light caramel sweetness for style, mineral notes of wet stone throughout, particularly in the finish. Cacao bean, figs, white pepper, walnut and pecan, moderate to heavy dry roast, touches of yeast that stay in the background. Never sweet, it becomes almost bracingly dry on the finish, bitter from roast (and maybe hops) and tannic minerality that sucks the moisture from the mouth and leaves more wet stone behind. Light bodied and edging on watery despite flavour. Soft carb. This is really lovely, not in the same league as a typical "dubbel" type beer at all. It seems drier, flintier, roastier, and with a special character from the yeast. Really it’s only the mouthfeel that is a little underwhelming but there’s the 12 for that! A real sipper despite easy drinkability.
