Westvleteren has the smallest output of the Trappist breweries, with only a small part of their production going very far into the world.

Beer bought at In de Vrede café by the brewery. Pours dark mahogany with sone red tints. The beer gives a good frothy head that settles into a noce layer throughout the session. The aroma is slightly discrete, as the 12, but provides more content. Roasted notes, some dried fruit and chocolate? The taste is malty and roasted, bitterness is combining with some dried fruit to balance it. In this sense it reminds a lot of the 12, which also balances sweetness and bitterness superbly. The bitterness turns into licorice in the aftertaste. The palate is soft, not overly effevescent, medium bodied. The 8 was tasted side-by-side with a 12, and it shares so many things I think it is brewed more or less by the same recipe, but just 2% lower in alcohol. It’s a great beer, underrated next to the 12, but defintely not far from it. It is a little more bitter, a little less tastier, and doesn’t reach as far as the 12. But it is a great beer, rustic but better than the Rochefort 8 and the Westmalle Dubbel.

Bottle: Muddy, nearly opaque brown with a mahogany glaze; foamy, khaki head skims the top & settles as a soapy collar. Aroma of some slightly musty black cherry skins, dates, & prunes, though far on the sweeter side of the spectrum. Fruity esters, light licorice, clove, rotten banana mash, spicy Belgian yeast, & some sweet Candi sugar notes. Lightest tough of phenols. Flavor is earthy & slightly bitter up front with a good, pronounced hoppiness. Candi sugar lightens things up, adding some sweetness along with notes of raisin, prune, anise, & mildly stale toffee malts. Bready yeast, clove, fruity & spicy esters towards the finish with a lingering banana & date fruit combo. Mild alcohol, does not cross into vinous or tart grape territory as many Belgian dubbels (or strong ales) do. Nice stuff, although I prefer Bernardus Prior 8.

0.33l bottle. Reddish brown body, light brown head. The aroma is weaker than what I expected. It has some cocoa, bread and yeast notes. Taste of cocoa, caramel, yeast, plums and reisins. Medium bodied, silky texture. Very nice.
