Westvleteren has the smallest output of the Trappist breweries, with only a small part of their production going very far into the world.

Beer bought at In de Vrede café by the brewery. Pours dark mahogany with sone red tints. The beer gives a good frothy head that settles into a noce layer throughout the session. The aroma is slightly discrete, as the 12, but provides more content. Roasted notes, some dried fruit and chocolate? The taste is malty and roasted, bitterness is combining with some dried fruit to balance it. In this sense it reminds a lot of the 12, which also balances sweetness and bitterness superbly. The bitterness turns into licorice in the aftertaste. The palate is soft, not overly effevescent, medium bodied. The 8 was tasted side-by-side with a 12, and it shares so many things I think it is brewed more or less by the same recipe, but just 2% lower in alcohol. It’s a great beer, underrated next to the 12, but defintely not far from it. It is a little more bitter, a little less tastier, and doesn’t reach as far as the 12. But it is a great beer, rustic but better than the Rochefort 8 and the Westmalle Dubbel.

A cloudy cola brown coloured beer with a thick white head. A heady aroma of ripened fruits, raisins, cherries, plums, plus a malt aroma in the background. Complex doesn’t even start to describe this! Tart yeasty and possibly hoppy sourness, vinous and citrus fruit. Then a sweet dark fruit flavour and malt, like a Soreen malt loaf, only on another level! The finish just lengthens all the elements into a wonderous aftertaste. Tasted at "In de Vrede", Westvleteren.

It is beautiful dark caramel in color with residual yeast floating around, topped off by a light beige very soft head. Aroma is, like the XII, very complex, though the alcohol overrides the subtle roast and caramel. Though the consistency is not as viscous as one would expect for a beer like this, the taste brings up an earthy touch, but again the alcohol gets hard to ignore. It leaves a nice coffee aftertaste. Lovely beer.

An amazing beer that is well worth the price tag and the effort in finding. I brought several bottles back from Brussels to share with Family. It is unlike any other abbey I’ve ever had with an amazing presentation, taste, and finish.

Ruby Brown coloured beer with small head. Aroma of dark fruits, raisins and malts. Taste is bittersweet and yeasty. After taste is long with subtle sweetbitterness. Don’t drink this beer too cold. (12-16 C)

330 ml bottle @ home. Aroma fig, toffee and toasted bread, maybe some coriander. Pours brown notes with small but creamy head. Flavor is sweet with some spiciness to it. Light dark fruits and brown sugar. It's just soooo smooth. Excellent trappist! - with thirst, Niklas

Bottle, dark brown pour with a beige head, roasted malt taste with hints of honey and caramel, has a nice light spicy bitterness to it, not quite as good as the 12 but still a very good beer.

330 ml bottle. Aroma is fairly fruity with a lot of raisin, fig, and prune with lighter overripe stone fruit notes. Moderate caramel and toffee notes with some burnt sugar and hints of toasted bread and nuts. Light phenolic notes of coriander and pepper. Pours a dark, burnt amber with brown notes as well and a big, thick tan head with a lot of retention. Moderately high lacing with medium small legs. Flavor has a light sweetness with moderate bitterness. Moderate toffee and caramel with lighter notes of treacle and burnt sugar. Medium light toasted bread notes and hints of nuts. Moderate fruit notes of raisins, figs, prunes and dried fruit; all less noticeable than in the aroma. Faint coriander phenolics with light alcohol spice. Some lingering raisin, caramel and burnt sugar in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium high carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall a really enjoyable beer with a nice fruit character that is well balanced with a good malt complexity. Alcohol and sugars are both well hidden.
