3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Beer bought at In de Vrede café by the brewery. Pours dark mahogany with sone red tints. The beer gives a good frothy head that settles into a noce layer throughout the session. The aroma is slightly discrete, as the 12, but provides more content. Roasted notes, some dried fruit and chocolate? The taste is malty and roasted, bitterness is combining with some dried fruit to balance it. In this sense it reminds a lot of the 12, which also balances sweetness and bitterness superbly. The bitterness turns into licorice in the aftertaste. The palate is soft, not overly effevescent, medium bodied. The 8 was tasted side-by-side with a 12, and it shares so many things I think it is brewed more or less by the same recipe, but just 2% lower in alcohol. It’s a great beer, underrated next to the 12, but defintely not far from it. It is a little more bitter, a little less tastier, and doesn’t reach as far as the 12. But it is a great beer, rustic but better than the Rochefort 8 and the Westmalle Dubbel.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle thanks to Martinus, thanks a lot! Pours a hazy brown with a medium white head that leaves great lacing. Nose is full or dark fruits, raisins for the most part with some spicy undertones. Taste is sweet but less so than your usual dubbel with a higher level of bitterness too. Flavors of candi sugar and dark brown sugar. Some spicy/sweet finish that I don’t really appreciate. Carbonation is a but too high if you ask me and enhances the drying sensation. Body is medium. Glad to have been able to sample this but I will stick to my classics for now.

3.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 12/20
Purchased and consumed in Brussels.
Cap date: 08.10.13
A: pours a beautiful hazelnut ale with exceptional clarity. 2 fingers of peanut skin skIn foam falls soo slow and even then leaves a wonderful stack of quilted equivalence of the same. Near sheet lacing.
S: first thought: buttered popcorn and vanilla beans. As it warms some praline, raisin come thru, but nothing to save it.
T: alcohol is very forward here. Solvent. Some graham, dark prunes, but the alcohol is very evident. Not impressed.
M: creamy as fuck. Great resonance and the finish is silken. Really like the feel here. The carbonation is immediate, passive and constant. It’s really fine bubbles that create the exceptional feel.
O: not the worst dubbel I’ve had, where it disappoints is in the wrong places.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Shared a 33cl bottle directly from the abbey. Pours a hazy brown colour with a off-white head. Aroma has nuts, light yeast, bread, leather and earthy. Average and lively carbonation and medium body. Taste is bitter with sweet notes. Complex and two dimensional. Very balanced. Overall, is a very good beer and thank goodness I have a few more...

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Au nez c’est de la pomme fraiche à 80%, suivie 15 % de tarte tartin (pomme caramélisées +sucres cuits) + 5% d’épices et de céréals. C’est une bonne bière mais c’est pas non plus le fantasme absolue!!

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle shared with harrisoni at the Westvleteren St. Sixtus cafe. Very dark brown, slight off white head. Nose is caramel, brown sugar, lots of plums, dried date. Taste is very plummy, dried date, brown sugar, caramel. On the finish its got some lovely tingly hops on the tongue, with some slight citrous, sweet brown sugar and sweet dark fruit. The carbonation on this is very smooth and creamy too. It’s softer than Westy 12 and the reduced alcohol means you can appreciate the fruit and sweetness more. I think it’s probably as good as Westy 12. These really are superb beers.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bob, thanks for the incredible trade. Dark brown / plum color. Aroma of sweet dark fruits and bananna. Almost like a dark fruit smoothie. Taste is belgian yeast banana and dark fruit. Very smooth and drinkable. Not my favorite style but definately good for the style. I think i like it better than the 12.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Bottle split with the family. Aroma is dates, nuts, and mince pie. Pours hazy brown with great carbonation and a big fast head. Taste is dates, banana peel, pistachios, and vodka (without the booze). Wonderfully complex and not overbearing on the clovey Belgian yeast. Super easy to take down and remarkably delicious. This was not over-hyped.

4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Presque pas de mousse, nez alcoolisé et soupçon de vanille. Entrée de bouche agréable et douce. Ronde et bonne persistance en bouche. Très agréable, très bien équilibré et très bonne. Une valeur sûre.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Dark brown colour, murky. Beige big head. Had lumps of yeast (and?) at the bottom of the bottle. Strong rich flavour of a monastery beer multiplied by ten. Enjoyable.
