3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 BillWyce (302) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 11, 2012
From notes: Poured into a trappist glass-hazy nut brown with virtually no head, and some carbonation bubbles along the glass. Aromas of sweet, candied fruit and earthy yeast, with a solid woody note beneath. Deep flavors with a mild syrupiness to the body that manages to stay just this side of unpleasantly so. Taste is malty sweet, giving way to wood and mild vanilla notes that linger pleasantly in the finish, with a mild astringency from the alcohol. As it warms, the sweetness subsides some, as does the astringency in the finish. This lets the woody notes come to the fore, with more vanilla in the finish as well. Very nice.

Pour out of bottle at a tasting, dark orange pour with white head, aroma is big sweet candied orange, fruit, touch of lemon, hints of spice, very slight bourbon notes with lots of sweet vanilla in there as well. Taste is lots of sweet elements with candied fruit, vanilla, slight bourbon and alcohol notes, slight biscuit and caramel. Finishes very, very sweet.

Bomber. Red/brown liquid with small off-white head. Aroma of dark fruits, wood, vanilla, almond, nuts, sweet malt and unrefined sugars. Taste is medium sweet, light to medium bitter and has notes of sweet malt, fruit and sugars. Medium to full bodied with good carbonation. Quite nice and balanced. The oak doesn’t take over too much.
3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Chalsk (824) - North Caldwell, New Jersey, USA - DEC 30, 2011
Bottle. Pours an murky brown with orange hue and very thin white head. Aroma of citrus, candi sugar, vanilla, earthiness, and some Belgian spice underneath. Sweet citrusy, candi sugar taste with vanilla notes and some spice to round it out. Super sweet but it works. The vanilla smooths it out. The booze comes through.

Sweet, sweet, sweet! Raisins, plums, alcohol, honey, vanilla, and a dash of anise. Very high ABV, yet hidden well. A must try for quad lovers. I couldn’t descern the barrel aged quality as much, but I assume it is hidden in the vanilla notes.

750 ml caged and corked bottle, 2011 vintage. Served in a Dogfish Head Signature glass, the beer pours a murky brownish/red color with about a half inch off-white head that went away quickly. Not much lacing at all. Aroma is very nice, it smells like dark fruit, bourbon, vanilla, caramel, sweet apples and some brandy. The taste is pretty much like the aroma, the brew tastes like dark fruit (raisins, plums, figs), caramel, bourbon, vanilla, oak, booze and candy sugar. Mouthfeel/body is full, it’s coating and thick with low carbonation. I think this is a good beer overall. And for just $7.99 a bottle, I’d definitely buy this again, it’s certainly a bargain for the price.

(bottle). Clear and caramel in color. Vanilla and oak notes in aroma. Rich flavor including caramel and vanilla over Belgian style quad. Silky palate. Understated alcohol. Just delicious.
