ouch, this tasted fruity, but it packed a nasty kick in the head - it’s well named, I felt like a "blithering idiot" for the rest of the night, it went straight to my head and left me with a pounding headache for the rest of the night, guess it was just too damn strong for me.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Mooi amberkleurig bier met dikke romige crèmekleurige schuimkraag die langzaamaan inzakt. Zoet aroma en smaken van marsepein, caramel, aardbei, confituur. Warme zoete afdronk die goed blijft plakken. Prima barley-wine.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
I really wasn’t planning on reviewing this beer until I got to about the middle of the glass… hence the half-drank picture.
I am not a barleywine person. I’ve always found them syrupy, sticky and too sweet for my taste. But I can’t say that I’ve had many. I don’t believe barleywines should come in pours or containers larger than 4-6oz as you really don’t need more than that before they become overwhelming. Barleywines have always felt more of a digestif; to have in small quantities after dinner. Or with a nice cigar, the way I am enjoy this now.
Blithering Idiot pours a very reddish-brown and notes of dark cherries and plums immediately hit your nose. It has a decent head with some thin, but nice lacing that sticks around for a bit until about mid-glass. On the nose you’ll get an overwhelming scent of dark fruit, namely black cherries, prunes and plums. There was a faint “mediciny” scent I couldn’t shake after several sniffs.
The nose is simply a straight follow up to the palate; all dark cherries. As expected, very sweet and sticky with little to no hop bitterness to speak of. You can certainly feel the warmth of the booze in your mouth and as it makes its way down your system. At 19F outside, this was definitely the right choice of beer to end the evening. This beer is big, you can practically chew it. The lingering aftertaste is very sweet and reminiscent of brandy or cognac with a very faint , dry grain finish.
As I am halfway through my 12-oz pour, I truly wished Weyerbacher (and others) would offer barleywines in smaller presentations as this style would be ideal as a nightcap or an after-dinner conversation piece. I do find a certain level of elegance to this drink; imagine sitting in an elgant room filled with mahogony and oak furniture and some guy in a fancy suit talking about how his stock went one iota higher while you sip your barleywine from a fancy snifter and go… “what a blithering idiot”.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a deep, dense, dark-Amber and sunset orange with evenly dispersed slightly fine sediment.
Nose is gently sweet and dense, ripe cherry and date, caramelized apple, baking spice, floral noble hops, really nice balance of sweetness, dried fruit, floral hop, and malt.
Has a full body, a viscous date and candied cherry quality to it, some autumn spice identical to the nose. Molasses and glints of floral hops come through. Fairly dense and sticky cola/molasses linger.
Preferring my barleywines on the bitter, hop-forward side, this still proves to be balanced and hides the alcohol effortlessly. Very complex aroma is an added plus.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pour is a muddy river water brown with a small tan head. Aroma is a big dark fruit with some molasses sweetness and brown sugar. Flavor is a lot of sugar followed by some caramel, treacle and dark fruit with some tootsie roll sweetness. Alcohol is present but not overpowering considering this is a 11%. This is a nice, rich malty barely wine with plenty of tasty dark fruit and sugar without being overly sweet.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
caramel, coffee, alcohol, nuts, earthy, grass, citrus, herbs.
Deep amber colour, small off-white head.
Noticable bite, heavy sweetness, lightly salty, ABV evident, slightly boozy. Caramel and toffee dominate.
Fullbodied, sticky feel, soft carbonation, sweet and warming finish.
Solid, would have liked a more complex hop character to give an even higher mark.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 oz bottle pours an almost clear mahogany/amber with small off-white head that leaves little lacing. Aroma has caramel, cherry, raisins, and other dark fruits. Taste is slightly bitter at first, with a sweet middle and a slightly boozy finish. Body is medium with average carbonation and a syrupy mouthfeel. This is not a harsh barleywine at all, but there’s a lot going on here. It’s a sipper for sure, otherwise a few would make me a blithering idiot.

4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Slight grassy nose and pours amber with a lacey head. Front pallet has a slightly bitter but Barley Wine sweetness mostly from the malt. Difficult to discern a specific fruit taste. ALC content gives a nice warming fell at the back pallet. Finishes with a slight saliva forming sweetness that true to the company’s advertising, does make one enjoy another sip.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Cloudy amber with medium beige head. Aroma is like apple cider and caramel. Sweet, fruity flavor (hints of cherry and dates). Medium body and carbonation and the alcohol warms the throat. Nice end to a chilly winter evening.
