Snojerk321 (1914), San Diego, California, USA Jun 19, 2008 Bottle. Super hoppy nose, grassy and piny with lesser citrus and grapefruit. Clear dark copper-orange pour with a pretty soapy lacing beige head. High alpha acid levels with a taste similar to the nose, only sweeter. Caramel and resin. Hop-centric and hefty (though not boozy), full-bodied and heavy with some dark, almost tarry notes. Thick and chewy malt. Strongly bitter but not off-putting. Superb rendition. BeerFanDan17 (610), Land O Lakes, Florida, USA Jun 19, 2008 Very hoppy IPA--borderline grapefruity, but not overpowering. Crisp palate with hints of pear and grapefruit noticeable. On draft at Oldsmar Tap House. 12many (231), Ohio, USA Jun 17, 2008 Hazy amber, nice frothy head, with big floral-citrus aroma. Pretty good flavor balance and a lasting bitter aftertaste. Quite enjoyable. Tweety (336), Vancouver, Washington, USA Jun 15, 2008 12 oz. bottle. A solid DIPA. Nothing special, nothing bad, smooth, tasty, hoppy, refreshing, hoppy. I liked it. BiddleBrau (303), Midland Park, New Jersey, USA Jun 15, 2008 I dig this brew. Amber with thin white head. Great hoppy aroma and really clean flavor. Malty only to support the hop flavor. Always a treat. Sampled at Stoudts 17th Annual Microfest: June 2008 luvcasks (178), USA Jun 13, 2008 pours a lovely ambergris color with a nice fluffy white with generous lace.
Nose- pine, black pepper and some tangerine notes with a strong malt nose with caramel and a touch of toffee not to hider the hop aroma
Flavor: WIth all that alcohol and malt the flavor is really hop focussed clean big spicy (white pepper), citrus pith and some resiny notes supported by a big malt background with caramel and toffee notes.
Palate: Slightly syrupy but still finishes nice and dry with a ton of lingering hop flavors
Overall: A very well made double IPA - east coast style with great structure and malt presence enough not to hinder the hop exuberance. Alcohol is present but not hot - the balance of toffee notes and big big hop flavors (not tongue bruising) make this sipper easy to enjoy
I think my sample was slightly oxidized it was not as aromatic as other raters note here PorterPounder (3132), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Jun 10, 2008 Tallahassee, Fl. - Liquor Loft - 12 oz bottle. Sparkling medium to dark copper pour with a sticky, but thin white head that leaves decent lacing. Fresh, potent sprucey aroma with hints of pepper. Strong grapefruit citrus-forward flavor as expected but balanced well with a caramel like maltiness. Hints of pepper as well, with some hints of maple syrup and nectarines in the finish. Thickish mouthfeel - a bit on the stinging side - but should be expected with the strong ABV. Very well done. oteyj (713), Canterbury, New Hampshire, USA Jun 10, 2008 Pours a beautiful hazy amber with tight frothy head. Thick coat of lacing. A bead of sweat rolled down my forehead and my mouth started to water. A beautiful pour indeed. Aroma is floral and hoppy- citrus and pine. Smells almost resinous. Flavor is fresh and oh so refreshing. The hops are hard hitting- resin and pine with a mellow grapefruit undertone, but overall quite powerful. Subsides quickly- aftertaste is almost non-existant. Palate is smooth and crisp after the initial hop assault. This reminds me a lot of Smuttynose IPA. Definitely a hop monster.
