clingman71 (239), Centerville, Ohio, USA May 1, 2008 12oz. bottle. Pours a clear amber with a smallish head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt and piney resiny hops. Flavor begins malty sweet with a burst of citrus. This leads to some serious pine resin hop bitterness. The finnish is long and dry! This isn’t the biggest DIPA around, sort of a tweener to me, not enough punch and/or a big enough mouthfeel to really qualify as a double, but bigger than an IPA. Solid! DocHop (278), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Apr 30, 2008 Pours a beautiful honey gold that’s fairly clear with a small off-white head that lingers around the edges. Aroma is fantastic, full of hops that give the impression of a honey comb in a flowering pine tree. Sweet and citrusy but a little herbal. Initial taste is very full and creamy. Heavy malts for an IPA. The sweetness isn’t too powerful at all, but it still manages to balance the excellent hop finish. The finish isn’t too bitter and glides away smoothly. Definitely leaves you wanting another sip. Lothore (276), California, USA Apr 26, 2008 Updated: May 9, 2008A- Pours a beautiful reddish orange with quite a bit of carbonation bubbles present. Huge, fluffy eggshell head which fades to tons of lacing. One of my favorite looking DIPAs yet.
S- Smell is subtle sweet maltiness with the slightest hint of piney hops.
T- Taste starts off with a bit of hoppiness and moves on to a thick malt flavor which fades to a grapefruit bitterness. Absolutely great balance. Not too hoppy, but it will please hop heads out there.
M- Fairly viscous and well carbonated. A bit of resiny stuff sticks around in the mouth but its to be expected.
D- For 9% this is very drinkable. One of my favorite DIPAs to date. Absolutely excellently balanced with a grapefruit bitterness at the end that is bound to make you smile. waolsen (1220), Littleton, Colorado, USA Apr 24, 2008 bottle. orange/copper pour with frothy head and awesome lacing. nice large hop aroma and great malts. meaty aroma. amazing! Great piney hops. bitterness hits you up front and lingers while sweet rich caramel smooths it out. rich, hoppy, balanced and drinkable. 45thstbrewer (94), Conowingo, Maryland, USA Apr 24, 2008 Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA is excellent. It is definitly one of my favorites. BeerBelcher (930), Columbus, Ohio, USA Apr 23, 2008 Thanks to SurlySober for bringing this to WI in his wooden leg from a visit to VA. It was quite a nice beer, with a very piney hop presence.
This beer had a brassy clear body with some nice head formation. Smell was very hoppy, but smooth around the edges. It was mostly piney and a bit sweet, but the pine was very pronounced...maybe a bit cedar-y in aroma also. Flavor was nice and smooth up-front, with some piney-resiny flavor and a substantial body which seemed almost oat-y in flavor to me. Mouthfeel was smooth and quite nice.
This is a very good beer; I would highly recommend it. SurlySober, Flyer and I split this, New Holland Night Tripper, Ten Fidy, and some Central Waters Coffee Stout, all of which were quite good. craftbeerdesign (731), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Apr 20, 2008 12 oz bottle. pours a deep golden amber with a nice 1/4" white frothy head which lasts almost throughout... it decreases in size as the beer starts to disappear. huge citrusy hop aromas... some grapefruit... nice and smooth over the palate, very soft and balanced. The bitterness takes off on the tip of the tongue and falls back over the tongue to the finish. The nice hoppy finish stays with you for a while... so don’t start the evening off with a IIPA like this... you won’t taste anything else. Excellent IIPA.... highly recommended to any hophead. KnN (712), Greenbelt, Maryland, USA Apr 15, 2008 Huge pine aroma on this. Pours a dark amber color with a nice white head. Not much citrus hop character in this one. The flavor is like some kind of atom bomb though. Feels nice and smooth on the front end, but then BOOM what a hop kick! Nice IPA.
